The Degree Program

Objectives and general conditions

In this master's degree program, focus is placed on the mutual relationship between computer science and materials engineering. The main topics are data analysis, machine learning and big data on the one hand and materials such as metals and alloys, glass and ceramics, polymers and composites on the other.

The standard program length, including the master's thesis, is five semesters in total. The modular structure requires the completion of 12 modules in total (9 compulsory modules and 3 elective modules).

Program outline

The degree program begins with two elective modules which enhance participants' prior knowledge of either subject (Materials or Computer Science) to the required entry level. Engineers with a background in materials engineering take introductory modules in the field of applied computer science, while students who have completed a university degree in computer science take introductory modules on materials science and materials engineering. Students complete the other compulsory modules together to acquire extensive knowledge and practical skills in key areas of materials data science.

Therefore, you will take either introductory modules in data management, data processing and analysis or learn the basics of materials science and materials technologies and structure-property relationships. In the subsequent compulsory modules, students will acquire extensive knowledge and practical skills in areas including:

  • Data mining and machine learning,
  • Big data infrastructure,
  • Digital image processing and analysis,
  • Material data acquisition,
  • Data basis for material modelling and process simulations as well as
  • Material models and simulation tools.

As a graduate with interdisciplinary competences in the field of materials data science, you are able to take on the demanding tasks of a specialist as well as management tasks which require specific expertise at the interface between research and development tasks as well as data science methods in companies and research institutions in the field of materials science and materials engineering.

After graduation, you will also be qualified to pursue a doctorate / PhD.
