Since May 2021, universities of applied sciences in Saxony-Anhalt have been able to independently award doctoral degrees to their early career researchers. They have set up various Doctoral Centers for this purpose. As one of the first federal states, Saxony-Anhalt is leading the way with its own right to confer doctorates as a university of applied sciences, thus strengthening research and science at the universities in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
There are two Doctoral Centers at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences:
There are two inter-university Doctoral Centers:
- The Doctoral Center for Social, Health and Economic Sciences (SGW) of Merseburg, Anhalt, Harz and Magdeburg-Stendal Universities of Applied Sciences
- The Doctoral Center for Engineering Sciences and Information Technologies (IWIT) of Merseburg, Anhalt and Harz Universities of Applied Sciences
And there is one at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences:
In addition to doing an independent doctorate in a Doctoral Center, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences also offers the possibility of doing a cooperative doctorate in collaboration with another university.

Enrollment for doctoral studies
Enrollment is done by submitting a separate application to the Student Service Center under the following conditions:
- presentation of the acceptance certificate of a doctoral center or
- by submitting a confirmation from the doctoral center that the formal requirements for acceptance as a doctoral student into a doctoral center have been met
In the case of cooperative doctoral projects, written confirmation from the university's supervisor that the dissertation is being supervised must be submitted. The contact person at the Student Service Center is Susanne Steinmann.
Doctoral students are enrolled regardless of regular deadlines; enrollment can occur at any time during the semester. Enrollment for doctoral studies is voluntary. However, registration is mandatory for all doctoral degrees that are independently pursued at HSA.
