Nowadays, almost 60% of a building's energy needs are used for heating and cooling. The students Shahriar Shahabi and Ali M. Khomami want to reduce this need and make the building overall environmentally friendly, but at the same time also inhabitant-friendly.
With their developed “adaptive ETFE” technology, the two want to create an opportunity to design facades that meet both requirements by integrating electro-optical films. The term "adaptive" represents a reponsive radiation control system. Adaptive ETFE reacts to the surrounding environmental conditions, blocks radiation and adapts to the needs and wishes of the residents with regard to privacy, shading and views. This increases the comfort level of the residents compared to other lightweight or glass systems.
