It is with great pleasure that we congratulate the seven scholarship holders from the Department of Computer Science and Languages on being awarded the Deutschlandstipendium.
The students will now receive 300 euros per month for one year. Half of the funding is donated by companies in the region and half comes from the federal budget in recognition of outstanding academic achievements and social commitment.
We asked Lena Palubicki, one of our seven great award winners, about her funding and the application process so that many more students from the department and the university can benefit in the years to come.
Dear Ms. Palubicki, congratulations. You are one of the seven computer science students who received the Deutschlandstipendium this year. What achievements or projects do you think contributed to this award?
In my opinion, my good performance in my studies and my student involvement in the FB5 student council contributed to my being selected for the Deutschlandstipendium award. I always try to make an effort in all my modules and prepare well for the examinations.
To what extent do you see the Deutschlandstipendium as an incentive for your academic and personal development?
I see the Deutschlandstipendium as a great motivation to develop myself academically and personally. It's really motivating because you feel seen. For me personally, it means that I will work even harder in my studies to maintain or even improve on the achievements that helped me to get the scholarship. I would also like to continue my commitment to the students at our university.
What role does the network and support from the university play in your success?
The support from the university really helps me to improve my performance. We always have the opportunity to contact the professors, who can then also help us with problems or unanswered questions. This creates a positive atmosphere that makes learning easier, at least for me. In addition, this almost familiar atmosphere also helps less extroverted people like me to take on important tasks, such as working on the student council.
Do you already have plans for how you would like to use the financial support for your academic career or research projects?
I had always wanted to go to university after leaving school. Thanks to the support of the Deutschlandstipendium, I am now able to relieve my family financially and concentrate fully on my studies. As I also moved to Köthen specifically for the university, the scholarship allows me to pay my rent and meet my living expenses mainly independently.
How would you motivate other students to apply for the Deutschlandstipendium and what do you think are the most important steps in preparation?
It is important that students - especially first-year students - find out about the Deutschlandstipendium now. In my case, the information got past me and I then only had a short time to prepare everything for the application. But it's so important to get through the application process. Perhaps interested students could already create a professional CV now, which they can use for the next awarding of the Deutschlandstipendien. Or get involved in projects at the university that you wouldn't have thought of before, like working as a tutor or joining the student council. Overall, the motivation to submit an application is generally not very high at the university. So if you are interested and your performance is good, your chances of being selected are pretty good.
