Designforum 162 – Together we can see everything. Dr. Tine Melzer, Hochschule der Künste, Bern
Seeing is never passive but a complex practice involving perception, knowledge and engagement. What is seen – which meaning the viewer is aware of – depends on what we say. Images, ideas and their meanings change by our use of words in language. Rhetoric shifts in language, metaphorical transfer or interaction between image and text examplify how we undergo shifts of meaning. It matters, what we say about what we make, and together we can say everything.
Tine Melzer is based in Zürich and works as an artist and researcher with a focus on language. She studied Fine Arts and Philosophy and holds a PhD from the University of Plymouth, UK on Ludwig Wittgenstein meeting Gertrude Stein. Melzer taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and at other European academies since 2004. Since 2014 she is associate professor at the HKB University of the Arts. She currently researches on Aspect Change. Rollo Press published Taxidermy for Language-Animals. Her latest book Bleisulfid is out now.
