Teaching Mode Summer Semester 22
The MAID is returning to full on campus teaching in the summer semester 2022
International Master in Integrated Design (MAID)
The Department of Design in Dessau established a progressive educational model reflecting the historical values of the Bauhaus. Known as the “Dessau Model“ the unique approach to education is an effective example of a new institutional structure. Since 2002 a functioning infrastructure wherein students from all parts of the world feel at home has been created.
This MAID program (Master of Arts in Integrated Design) incorporates the essential design disciplines with the creative subjects communication design, product design, space, audiovisual and digital media. They are brought together through rigorous fundamental training and interdisciplinary problem solving. These integrative components form the contour of the Master program.
Under the theme “creating relations“ the emphasis of these three design disciplines will be newly applied. This international program focuses on the development of intercultural competences and the synergetic power of a working environment with students from various countries and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge and skills can be specialized in the Master program in the form of interdisciplinary projects. A high level of media competence is required in all semesters. Projects are based on both practical and experimental research. The systematic approach to problems and the creative development of individual solutions are emphasized.
International designers, visiting artists and other specialists will support projects according to the topic and the professional area of specialization. Also in this Master study course we intend strong interconnections of both the disciplines and the subjects. Furthermore we support research relevant tasks and offer opportunities for cooperation with a selection of professional institutions. The MAID profits from the longterm cooperation with e.g. the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. Projects with the Federal Environmental Agency have been newly added. In the future, this certainly unique constellation will provide for the dealing with a multitude of socially relevant and future oriented subject complexes.
We invite graduate junior designers and bachelors from design disciplines to utilize the synergies of integrated methods of thinking and work in complex tasks to find new and visionary solutions. The courses will be in English.
Head of Program
Coordination
Activities
As part of its Integrated Design philosophy, the MAID program seeks to create an interdisciplinary and multicultural environment, which allows students not only to develop original projects while gaining insights from other design disciplines and world cultures, but also to come together and enjoy student life beyond the academy, as a family.
Requirements to Study at the Program
The soft- and hardware market is extremely fluid and experiences constant changes and improvements. Hence the school can only provide basic and limited software and hardware. You are therefore required to bring your own laptop including the software that you need for your projects. Specialised soft- and hardware for 3D-printing and movie editing is available.
During your studies the university and the program will provide basic material in the workshops such as metal and wood for all students. Special material must be ordered through the workshops and must be paid for by the students as each project is very individual and it is neither possible nor fair to cover all model making costs by the program. Drawing and other materials and tools must are also covered individually by each student. Basic printing is available in the class rooms at no cost. The university also has a professional printing workshop offering letter press, offset and silk-screen printing as well as large size plotters and a digital printing machine. The program provides a basic coverage for such printing additional printing costs are covered by the students. Prints for final semester presentations of the studio class will be covered by the program.
The program also tries to offer excursions. Due to the budget laws in Germany, transportation can only be covered in rare cases but museum tickets and accommodation if applicable, will be covered by the program.
Please know and understand these conditions before you apply or accept the admission. Costs for projects per semester and other activities, depending on the sophistication of your projects, can be estimated on average at about 150€.
How we teach and why
Our international students are coming from varies educational backgrounds and even fields of design. This is a great challenge which we gladly accept and which has a big influence on our understanding of the program. Because of the different ways of teaching applied in countries over the world, we have experienced that the teaching style dominant in Germany and particularly at our school, needs a few words of explanation in order to avoid disappointed expectations and both sides.
Most of our classes are offered as projects where topics and themes are provided by the teacher or are developed together with the students. The necessary knowledge transfer is embedded in the seminars and takes place through discussions, consultations, student presentations and suggested reading. Knowledge transfer only rarely is done through instructional classroom lectures. We also see you and your experiences and previously acquired knowledge as vital components of our teaching and hence involve you into the transfer of knowledge which hence does not only happen from teacher to student but also from student to student under our guidance. This form of teaching is very common in design schools in Germany especially on master level where you are asked to apply and if necessary improve your methodological as well as research skills. We are of course always open to your needs in terms of specific design and research methods and are asking you to voice such needs so they can be implemented into the program if possible. We are not simply feeding you with more or less necessary pieces of knowledge, instead we are guiding you in learning what it takes to become a responsible and successful integrated design professional. For that we offer a lot of freedom on our classes in terms of the how things are done and are always available for guidance and consultation.
Please know that with students coming to us from pretty much all over the world, the common base might not be as common as you expect it to be. Some programs are very research and theory based, others are very hands-on and ready-to-market oriented with less theoretical background. It is our joy to take you all to a respectable master level in the field of design.
Embrace and enjoy the differences.
Curriculum
The curriculum is based on an interlinked structure which allows an education in essential design fields – creating comprehensive knowledge, methodic diversification and creative specialization. Throughout the course of study, product design, communication design and media design are the main fields, accompanied by supporting design disciplines. The Studio Module is the center of the MAID courses. Under a principal topic progressive research and creative methods are applied to complex design projects in order to develop strategic and relevant design solutions.
Based on the idea to build a bridge between our Master Intermediales Design (language of instruction: German) and our international Master of Integrated Design (language of instruction: English) we will be able to offer even more interdisciplinary studies and more interactivity between the two programs.
The Elective Module offers complementary courses to the studio class and focuses on applied and advanced technologies, experimental approaches or fundamental skills.
The Expertise Module includes specialized workshops, excursions, synchronizing classes to gain further qualifications or courses offering professional competences, such as teaching and management skills etc. Design Sciences introduce scientific and theoretical discourses and reflections corresponding with the design projects.

Portfolio
Our program aim at combining the design fields of graphic, communication, digital, media and industrial design etc. by offering projects and classes that require the students to sophistically apply previously acquired skills in one or more of these fields. Even though architecture, interior design, art and fashion design are at the far end of this list, students with these backgrounds are also eligible if they can proof professional skills in the design fields mentioned above.
Successful portfolios must show that the applicant is able to think outside of the box. As part of this thinking we are interested in seeing a variety of projects tackling different problems and offering different solutions and varieties thereof. We are very much looking at the process behind your work rather than high-end renderings of final solutions. Your portfolio hence must includes sketches, models (real-world not only digital), and other forms of exploring your ideas of each project. Also we need to understand the context of your projects, hence require briefs and short explanations on the why and how. Please know that we seek to understand your thought and design process, so make sure that that is what you show in your portfolio. It is not so much about quantity but deep and intellectual quality. Hence your portfolios should differ from one you would send to an agency to get a job. We are an educational facility wanting to understand where you are at, in order to see where we can take you further.
The porfolio must be composed of projects related to design in the most direct sense possible. We are not an architecture or an interior architecture program and hence cannot evaluate strictly architectural projects. The same is true for interior design projects. There are very good schools and programs offered directly for those backgrounds. However, if you have professionally worked on projects from the design fields mentioned above, we are happy to receive and assess your application.
We appreciate different approaches and ways of thinking but we must make sure that all students can work together using the same soft- and hardware skills. We also must make sure that all accepted students are on a somewhat comparable level. Each student is required to jump right into the projects.
Please keep in mind that your portfolio plays the biggest role in our decision making process. It should represent who you are as a designer and how you work and how you think.
Application Procedure
The school is now using uni-assist for all international applications. An additional application directly to the university is not possible. Please do not send any material to the university. Please read the information offered by uni-assist carefully. As of now, all documents have be be uploaded onto the uni-assist portal. It is not necessary to send hard-copies at this point.
