Course content and objectives
Knowledge of financing, controlling, leadership, strategy, and marketing are also taught in agricultural bachelor’s degree programs, but future managers should learn about them in more depth. This is because many agricultural companies today are looking for competent experts who also have the essential leadership skills needed for management positions.
In the context of the degree program, which is intended to be a distance-learning program, future leaders are prepared to take on management positions. In agriculture as well as in agribusiness, management knowledge and skills are needed to recognize current trends at an early point in time, view them as challenges for the company, and implement targeted actions in response. Applying merit-based human resource management, skillful leading of discussions and negotiations, controlling, and strategic management are the key requirements for this.
The distance learning program in Agricultural Management is completed using modern e-learning methods. Of course intensive supervision by the university’s faculty is guaranteed. With a maximum of 25 students per semester, active networking and mutual exchanges are a part of the experience.

Managers in agriculture are being sought desperately. Anhalt University in Bernburg and the Andreas Hermes Academy have therefore established Germany’s first distance-learning degree program for agricultural managers.
The offer is meant for graduates of universities of applied sciences and other universities who have already gained initial practical experience in their companies. The distance-learning program will provide them with cutting edge management expertise. They will be able to expand and deepen their competences in human resource management, negotiations, controlling, strategic management, leadership methods, self-organization, and communication.

Questions about the degree program
-
Why is this a distance-learning program?
The first reason is that a distance-learning (DL) program enables participants to continue their careers. This is absolutely essential for many of the managers who make up our target group. It also creates much more direct connections between studies and the company.
-
How long does the Master’s program last?
The Master’s program is set up to take five semesters. In four semesters, a total of 14 subject-area and interdisciplinary modules are completed. In the fifth semester, the Master’s thesis is written and defended.
-
What are the contents of the degree program?
The 14 modules cover subject-area and interdisciplinary topics. We differentiate between general agricultural management and interdisciplinary, personality-related topics.
- In the agricultural modules, topics include, for example, innovations in animal and plant production and new technologies in management as well as agricultural law and agricultural policy.
- In the general management modules, topics such as strategic management and controlling, financing, marketing, and project management are discussed.
- The interdisciplinary modules then cover self-organization and personality, communication, negotiation, and management.
In the final semester, an elective topic such as public relations, quality management, or food safety can be chosen. -
What are the modules in the degree program?
The 14 modules cover subject-area and interdisciplinary, personality-related topics. The respective modules can be separated into a corresponding module category:
Agricultural modules
- Innovationen in der Tierproduktion
- Technologien in der Unternehmensführung
- Innovationen in der Pflanzenproduktion
- Agrarrecht und Agrarpolitik
- Qualitätssicherung und Qualitätsmanagement in der Landwirtschaft
General management modules
- Strategisches Management und Controlling
- Finanzierung
- Marketing
- Projektmanagement
Interdisciplinary modules- Selbstorganisation und Persönlichkeit
- Kommunikation und Verhandlung
- Mitarbeiterführung
- Umgang mit Medien
You can find a detailed description of the modules in the module handbook.
-
How will I be supervised in this program?
Participants are supervised for the entire program by an Anhalt University program advisor. He is the first point of contact for all questions not related to the content and takes on coordination tasks with the module coordinators.
The instructors who are in charge of the respective module content are responsible for continual content supervision. Besides the consultation dates, they are also available by telephone, email, and a special intranet web platform.
-
Is the program compatible with my job?
In general yes, as it is set up primarily as a distance-learning program. During a total of 52 on-site classroom days spread across five semesters, the foundation is laid for being able to complete the program mostly at home and online (e-learning). Most of the on-site classroom days take place during the winter, when the agricultural sector is not quite as busy, and on the weekend, that is, from Friday to Saturday.
-
How many students take part in the program?
In each cohort, a maximum of 20 students may enroll.
-
When is the program complete?
After a total of five semesters in which 90 credits need to be obtained. Each of the 14 modules is assigned 4 credits totaling 56 credits. There are two credits for each of the two excursions and 30 credits for the Master’s thesis including the defense.
With 90 credits, the participants receive a full MBA degree.
-
How does this kind of Master’s degree help me?
In contrast to many other continuing education courses, the accredited Master’s program is completed with a state-recognized degree “Master of Business Administration” (MBA). This degree is also recognized internationally and certifies that the recipient has subject-area and general management competences.
-
Why does the program end with an MBA?
With the MBA degree, we want to express that besides agricultural topics, general management and leadership competences are also taught. Our degree program is not an agricultural Master’s program.
