Research Assistant Movement Ecology and Land Use (m/w/d), Nr. 297

to be filled.

The employment relationship is based on the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states. The appointment is made in pay group 13 of the TV-L.

Within the scope of the assigned tasks, we offer the opportunity for a doctoral degree.

 The position is located at the Chair of Faunistics and Wildlife Conservation and is integrated in the research project "BioTrain: Training machine learning algorithms: new pathways to analyze and predict patterns and relationships of cross-scale biodiversity data".

The project:

The project predicts ecosystem functionality based on biodiversity and environmental data using powerful machine learning algorithms. The position advertised here covers the area of "Mobile Links", which aims to develop predictive models for the influence of grazing animals (mobile links) on plant and bird communities and thus landscape resilience across different spatial and temporal scales.

Your tasks will include:

  • analysis of the influence of grazers (mobile links) on plant and bird communities and landscape resilience across different spatial and temporal scales based on existing datasets (more than 10 years of high-resolution movement data of grazers, behavioral data, biodiversity data, satellite data)
  • application and further development of machine learning algorithms
  • development of predictive models based on external training data sets
  • development of management concepts across scales, cost-benefit analysis
  • provision of software (R packages) as well as further development and optimization of management concepts
  • presentation of results to land users, environmental associations, authorities as well as at scientific meetings and publications in international scientific journals.


  • academic degree (diploma or master's degree) in ecology/ zoology/ biology/ conservation or other natural sciences and strong interest in mathematical modeling or academic degree (diploma or master's degree) in applied mathematics (numerical methods) and strong interest in ecological modeling
  • very good statistical and analytical skills (preferably good knowledge of R)
  • good working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • experience in one or more of the following areas: mathematical or computer simulation modeling, database management, telemetry, wildlife ecology, wildlife biology
  • very good knowledge of German and English (written and spoken)
  • a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and willingness to engage in scientific exchange with other disciplines
  • strong, solution-oriented communication and comprehensible presentation of project results are desired
  • motivation, independent working style, ability to work under pressure, ability to work in a team and negotiation skills
