Application Requirements

The Master in Integrated Design (also known as MAID) is a post-graduate degree program. We are happy to welcome students from all over the world and many walks of life.

Entry Qualifications and Documents (all documents need to be uploaded to the uni-assist portal)

  • BA degree in Design or closely related disciplines with min. 210 ECT
  • In case of BA degrees in other fields than design, the commission will decide if they are elligible.
  • Self-study is not considered as formal education. Paid online courses in related design fields must be documented with a certificate. They must be approved by the commission who decides if they can be considered.
  • A copy of your complete transcript of records issued by your university in the original
language, including all courses and results
  • A translation of your transcript of records into English, including all courses and results
    (provided by a sworn translator)
  • Relevant professional experience in design or related fields
  • English language requirements: C1 (7.0 or higher) or equivalent: TOEFL iBT (95-120 or higher)
TOEFL ITP Level 1 (627-677 or higher). Please note that equally high scores in reading, listening, writing and speaking are mandatory. If the scores in any of the 4 categories are exceptionally low, we will have to consider the proof of language as insufficient to secure our quality of studying.
  • A proof that your language of instruction on BA or MA level was English can waive the necessity to submit a language certificate if the level of English is equivalent to C1. In cases of doubt, we will require an additional language certificate.
  • A PDF portfolio designated to the program, showing up-to-date professional design skills (see portfolio advice on website). The PDF must present the projects within one document. Links are only accepted as an exception, in case of multi-media projects and will only be considered if the projects are also presented within the PDF portfolio.
  • Motivation letter
  • CV
  • Letter of recommendation if possible
  • To enter the post-graduate program, all applicants are required to show relevant professional work experience in the field of at least 12 months after having obtained their bachelor's degree.

Portfolio

Our program aims at combining the design fields of graphic, communication, digital, media and industrial design etc. by offering projects and classes that require the students to sophistically apply previously acquired skills in one or more of these fields. Even though architecture, interior design, art and fashion design are at the far end of this list, students with these backgrounds are also eligible if they can proof professional skills in the design fields mentioned above as well as officially accepted qualifications.

Successful portfolios must show that the applicant is able to think outside of the box. As part of this thinking we are interested in seeing a variety of projects tackling different problems and offering different solutions and varieties thereof. We are very much looking at the process behind your work rather than high-end renderings of final solutions. Your portfolio hence must includes sketches, models (real-world, not only digital) and other forms of exploring your ideas of each project. We also need to understand the context of your projects, hence require brief and short explanations on the why and how. Please know that we seek to understand your thought and design process, so make sure that that is what you show in your portfolio. It is not so much about quantity but deep and intellectual quality. Hence your portfolios should differ from one you would send to an agency to get a job. We are an educational facility wanting to understand where you are at, in order to see where we can take you further.

The portfolio must be composed of projects related to design in the most direct sense possible. We are not an architecture or an interior architecture program and hence cannot evaluate strictly architectural projects. The same applies to interior design projects. There are very good schools and programs offered directly for those backgrounds. However, if you have professionally worked on projects in the design fields mentioned above, we are happy to receive and assess your application.

We appreciate different approaches and ways of thinking but we must make sure that all students can work together using the same soft- and hardware skills. We also must make sure that all accepted students are on a somewhat comparable level. We therefore must see that you are officially qualified to work in the field of design especially if your original background is from outside the field. Each student is required to jump right into the projects.

Please keep in mind that your portfolio plays the biggest role in our decision making process. It should represent who you are as a designer and how you work and how you think.

Fees

Every student is expected to pay €800 (tuition fee) plus €96 (administrative fee for general registration and student union) per semester.

The tuition fee of €800 has to be paid to cover a variety of costs, e.g. teaching assignments, printer cartridges for studio printers, furniture, welcome events, excursions, (entry tickets and accommodation), additional lectures, graduation and also administration. Even if not all of the these apply to each semester, they do all apply over the course of your studies. Please know that the program is heavily subsidized by the German government, the tuition fee allows some independence and helps us to cover costs that otherwise would have to be covered entirely by the students themselves.

Application Deadline

The MAID welcomes new students every semester. The application deadline for the winter semester is April 30, the deadline for the summer semester is October 31.

The summer semester starts on April 1, the winter semester starts on October 1 of each year. We advise new students to arrive two weeks in advance to prepare their stay here.
