Off to the water
As a converted excursion steamer, the Make Science Halle functions as a floating laboratory and classroom along the Blue Ribbon of Scienceon the Saale and Elbe rivers. The Make Science Halle brings science and people together on and along the river. Equipped with modern technologies and a mobile laboratory, it serves as a central location for science communication in Saxony-Anhalt.
It stopped off in Bernburg for Saxony-Anhalt Day 2026 and, as a special place for science and encounters, offered numerous opportunities to discover, try out and exchange ideas.

River cruise "Discovering floodplain landscapes on the Saale" - Mr. Sven Guttmann, Head of WWF Office Middle Elbe
Floodplain landscapes are among the most dynamic and at the same time most endangered ecosystems in Europe. Along the Saale, there is an opportunity to experience this special natural landscape from the water and to understand its diverse functions. Sven Guttmann will discuss various aspects during the trip: from the importance of floodplains for flood protection to current threats such as drought and renaturation projects in the region. The connection between shipping and floodplain protection as well as species protection issues - from beavers to wolves - will also be discussed.
"Alluvial landscapes are fundamentally particularly exciting, dynamic and highly endangered throughout Europe and therefore worth protecting," emphasizes Guttmann. The event is aimed at anyone interested in nature. No previous knowledge is required. The expert emphasizes dialogue and exchange: questions and discussions are expressly encouraged. Depending on the interest of the audience, further nature conservation topics can also be discussed in depth.

Saale expedition from Bernburg to Alsleben
On our return trip from Bernburg to Halle (Saale), we will take you to Alsleben and offer you a varied program on board during the trip: Become researchers yourself and take water samples with us, which we will examine directly on board under the microscope and with our analysis case. Find out what substances and creatures are in the water.
In the hands-on kitchen, everything revolves around algae as the food of the future. Here you can try out how versatile and surprising this resource is.
Creative hands-on activities on recycling, upcycling and climate and water topics await you at various research stations - design buttons from fish leather, marvel at our algae reactor or get inspired to talk about structural change in Central Germany with our district debate box. There is something for young and old to discover here!
In good weather, you can enjoy the sun and the view of the floodplain landscape along the Saale on the upper deck.
