Versatile and full of shapes—poplar wood meets the laser cutter!

With the help of a laser cutter and an optimal arrangement of the cutting patterns, Katja Petry (a design student) is able to work the wood with millimeter precision in her design products. The kerf-bending method makes the poplar plywood flexible and malleable. This results in whimsical table and hanging lamps, as well as tea lights that cast imaginative shadows throughout the room. There are no limits to her creativity, so new products are constantly being created.

Here are two examples:

The Plug-Together Christmas Tree:
A sustainable alternative to a traditional Christmas tree! When disassembled, the tree is very flat and can be stored away quickly. The wood is easy to repair and can be decorated and used again every year. Thanks to its square base, it stands securely.

The Flower Cabinet:
A storage solution and decorative wall feature. Clothes or toys can be tucked away in this cabinet in the blink of an eye. The flower petals can be opened and closed individually with a light press.

All products are made of natural poplar wood and are suitable for custom painting. And by the way: There’s virtually no waste—the laser cutter makes this good use of material possible!
