Title: Development of reliable serviceability tests for polymers used as backsheet insulation in photovoltaic modules

Description: Polymer materials, in particular those used as PV module backsheets, must be highly resistant to weathering. This includes a complex combination of stress factors, such as temperature cycles, moisture and light, and other influences, such as salt, dust or high system voltages. This important weather resistance is essential, especially in the context of the target service life of more than 25 years.

However, current field studies show that after just a few years of operation (4-8 years) there are obvious changes in the substance of the backsheets, some of which are associated with safety risks and yield losses. Work is being carried out worldwide to identify the causes and understand the failure mechanisms. In addition to a fundamental understanding, it is important for the product development of backsheet manufacturers and PV module manufacturers to refer to solid and scientifically based standards. The aim of this project is to develop a standardizable and internationally acceptable test sequence for PV module backsheets with efficient test times, mapping of real operating conditions, independent of material and manufacturer and optimized in terms of effort. Results from the consortium round robin should validate the results and point out device specifics. In addition, the results of the round robin should provide a better understanding of the reproducibility and scattering between laboratories.
