Project: BioMatters - Materials Made from Mycelium and Byproducts
Louis Wahlich, a master’s student in Intermedia Design, is developing innovative, mycelium-based materials from organic waste products such as coffee grounds and hemp fibers as part of his BioMatters project. In the future, these materials may even be used in 3D printing.
The scholarship enables Louis to further expand his research into sustainable material innovations. The concept of sustainability is particularly important to him: The funding encourages him to “work on the materials of tomorrow, starting today.”

Project: Insulation and Acoustic Panels Made from Olive Pits
Architecture students Johanna Reßler and Raphael Biller are focusing on a previously untapped byproduct of olive oil production: crushed olive pits. Their project uses this material to develop an eco-friendly insulation and acoustic panel that is not only resource-efficient but also has the potential to become a circular, marketable building product.
The focus is on building a functional prototype and conducting an examination of its sound and thermal insulation properties as the foundation for a future marketable, recyclable product.
