Management of dry calcareous grasslands in the Tote Täler FFH area

The supra-regional special feature of the Tote Täler nature conservation and FFH area (southwest of Freyburg) is its extremely high biodiversity. At the same time, however, the area has high maintenance deficits in some areas. The aim of the project is to convert more of these originally open areas into target-oriented use in order to optimize them with regard to improving and securing the conservation status of the habitat types and species of the Habitats Directive, i.e. the implementation of the Natura 2000 network.

The nature conservation success monitoring is intended to evaluate the suitability of site-adapted grazing methods in the FFH area. The measure promotes the conservation and development of the cultural landscape. Four extremely species-rich steep slopes have been managed with rotational goat grazing since 2012, and the effects will continue to be scientifically monitored. On areas of high conservation value, grazing methods that have been little tested but implemented nationwide, such as the paddocking of sheep, are to be systematically tested. In addition, the long-term effects of year-round horse grazing on species- and orchid-rich calcareous grasslands are to be systematically monitored. In addition, the aim is to raise public awareness of environmental protection and inform multipliers about the objectives of nature conservation through targeted knowledge transfer into state-wide practice.
