Project title: Sim-Bio: Numerical simulation of biological systems on multiple scales
Project description: In this project, two doctoral students are investigating scientific questions related to the epidemiology of infectious diseases and the dynamics of hormonal processes. They employ mathematical models and perform computer simulations. In the field of infectious disease epidemiology, the COVID-pandemic has underscored the importance of understanding the behavior and the spread of emerging pathogens. Although a lot is known now about COVID-19 and its strains, knowledge about potentially new viral pathogens is still limited. Here, mathematical models and numerical simulations can be used to predict scenarios for the emergence, transmission dynamics, and virulence of such pathogens. The second topic deals with fertility problems due to hormonal disorders, which are not uncommon in developed countries such as Germany and its demographic changes. In order to promote follicular growth in affected women, hormones are administered according to certain medical protocols. However, the intervention in the hormonal cycle is not fully understood and the success of therapy is strongly subject to chance. Mathematical models and simulations can contribute to our understanding here as well and may provide new treatment approaches.
