Monastery Christmas

Christmas tradition in Bernburg

Each year in December, Anhalt University invites the city’s residents and guests to an international monastery Christmas in the Bernburg Monastery, Klostergasse 7a. The festival is a cultural highlight in the time of Advent and provides an especially impressive atmosphere within the old monastery walls.

On Saturday, St. Nicholas and fairy tale characters from all over the world arrive at 13:00 on Bernburg’s Saale banks in decorated boats. On the pedestrian bridge between the Alter Markt and the Saalplatz, everyone can watch the colorful procession. The visitors then walk through the Alter Markt to the monastery, where the two-day Christmas program is opened with a celebration within the historical walls.

What all is there to do? The medieval monastery walls provide a fascinating backdrop for music, dancing, and fairy tale performances. International Christmas rituals are introduced in cultural programs, giving visitors a look at the Christmas traditions in various cultures. A handicraft and farmers’ market suited to the atmosphere offer artwork and Christmas products from German and international designers and producers. And of course there are many different things to eat and drink: traditional Christmas fare, regional dishes, or simply classic food. There’s something for everyone.

Finally, children will also have plenty to do: Presents, dancing, singing, playing, and arts and crafts ensure they get into the Christmas spirit.
