Module Handbook
The master's degree program in Landscape Architecture seeks highly qualified applicants who are interested in graduate education in English with a focus on:
Landscapes in the European context
The location of Bernburg in central Germany facilitates site visits to many historical gardens and leading examples of post-industrial landscapes. In contrast to the pleasant situation of Bernburg, a small city founded in the middle ages, we work alternately on studios concerning the nearby areas and metropolitan areas e.g. Berlin, Hamburg or international project sites. The degree program is module based and workshop-oriented and includes exposure to leading guest lecturers and critics.
Interdisciplinary and intercultural aspects
The culturally and subject-related heterogeneous background of the students in Landscape Architecture, a team-oriented working method as well as the interdisciplinary and generalist character of the program create a wide range of perspectives and planning approaches. Based on a broad knowledge of concepts, theories and techniques, problem-solving models are developed, compared and examined for their applicability in different cultural and political contexts.
Application-oriented and problem-solving approach
Students will work on a wide range of topics regarding the field of protecting, planning, developing and designing open spaces in urban and rural environments using their diverse backgrounds of previous professional experience. Our aim is to enable students to creatively develop application-oriented and problem-solving strategies for sustainable forms of planning solutions – taking into account the changing framework conditions in the various countries. Particular attention will be paid to a synopsis of planning-relevant relationships between ecological, sociological, economic, functional and aesthetic aspects.
New technology tools
The academic and professional studies are strongly supported and influenced by emerging digital imaging, landscape simulation and geographic information tools. Practical design studios fully integrate the use of 3-D imaging tools and the informational resources of the internet and in the professional field.

Visa
For the purpose of studies, you are required to obtain a Student/Applicant Visa (Studienbewerbervisum) from the German embassy in your home country. Once you are in Germany, it will be extended to cover the period of your studies. A “Tourist Visa” will in no case be recognized, since it can not be transformed into a student residence permit in Germany.
Citizens of a member-state of the European Union as well as Honduras, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, Switzerland and the USA do not need an entry visa but must apply for a student resident permit when they get here. In all cases, please check with the German embassy authorities in your country whether you need a visa before coming to Germany.
Visa application forms can be downloaded and must be submitted to the local German embassy. Please contact the respective authorities as soon as possible to obtain detailed information about the visa application procedure. Our experience has shown that it may take a while to get a visa, the application period ranging from 2 weeks to 4 months.

07. Before Starting your studies: What is a blocked account?
The Blocked Account, or Sperrkonto, is a special type of bank account that might be crucial for different categories of people wishing to arrive to Germany. In order to get a German student visa and/or German student residence permit, one of the prerequisites is that the applicants can provide the authorities with proof that they have enough money to cover their stay in Germany for at least a year. And the Blocked Account is one of the best ways to do so! As long as the international students have opened a Blocked Account with an accepted Blocked Account provider in Germany and transferred the money requested by the German government, the prerequisite for the proof of finances is met.
In a word, Blocked Account serves as proof that international students who want to study in Germany can cover their living expenses for a minimum period of 12 months without any financial support from the German government. You can find more information about the same here:
https://www.mygermanuniversity.com/articles/Blocked-Account-Germany

https://www.mygermanuniversity.com/articles/Student-Visa-Germany
-
11. Before Starting your studies: Are there any scholarships that I can apply for?
Various scholarships are offered now and then by the international office (IO) but since the scholarships require certain criteria and the number of applications by students from the entire university is high whereas the number of awarded scholarships is low, it will be difficult/there won’t be any guarantee to obtain such a scholarship. Please check the information provided by the International office on the University Website regularly to not miss an opportunity. However, you may of course apply for external scholarships for example with the DAAD.
-
12. Before Starting your studies: I have gotten admission in the program, is there a deadline for arriving in Bernburg and joining the courses?
Yes, the 31st of October is the last date till which you can arrive in Germany and join the study program in Bernburg. If you don’t think you can make it until then please either consider a deferral to the next Winter Semester or withdraw your application before the 31st of October. You will get your Fee refunded if you have already paid it and are unable to arrive timely.
-
13. Before Starting your studies: How can I defer my admission to the next Winter Semester?
Already admited applicants who cannot start their studies for the first admission semester due to visa delays have the possibility to re-apply for the next admission semester via their already existing account in the SSC portal. (Students should refrain from re-registering on the portal!).
The new application can be created via the Burger menu at the top left under Studies offered (Studies offered) Studienbewerbung (Application) within the regular application period; the old uni-assist examination report and the leter of admission must be uploaded as the degree certificate/Master's entrance qualification.
The applicants have to wait and then reapply at the regular deadlines for the next year.
If applicants have not yet matriculated, they do not need to do anything else and can simply reapply for the next year. However, if they have already matriculated and only then decide that they cannot start their studies this year, the first thing to do is to return the application. To do this, simply send an e-mail to the Enrollment Office by October 31 at the latest.

14. Before Starting your studies: Can I join the program in the Summer Semester?
No, unfortunately that is not possible.
-
15. Before Starting your studies: Is it possible to join the program online?
No, MLA is an in-presence study program. While some classes are at times taught online, 99 percent of the program is in presence.
-
16. Before Starting your studies: Can the University help me in expediting my Visa by communicating with the Embassy In my home country?
No. The university is not allowed to do so.
-
17. Before Starting your studies: Can the University help me in finding an accommodation and offer me arrival support?
The responsibility of finding an accommodation and managing arrival in Germany is the responsibility of the Student. MLA can help guide you with some queries but MLA Is not responsible for Accommodation or arrival support.
-
18. Before Starting your studies: I plan to support myself financially by working part-time as a student in the second year, how can I do this?
MLA strongly discourages students to work part-time during the while working during the first year of their studies as the studies in the first year : 1st + 2nd Semester are intense and the schedule does not allow for the students to work and successfully finish their studies, moreover the students move out of Bernburg in the third semester to pursue their Internships and also get renumeration during this period, quite a few of the students then continue to work as Student-Employees at their offices and make some extra income that ways.
Please ensure that you have sufficient funds for a blocked account for the entire span of your Masters degree and do not depend on the chance that you can find a job to support yourself financially during your studies.
-
19. Starting your Studies: How do I keep a look at the latest news, deadlines for Fee Submission/ Registration and my grades ?
Once you are an enrolled student, you will receive passwords to all your digital accounts such as your HSA Student Email account, your HIS-QIS Account, your moodle account etc. Please always make sure to keep logging in and checking the emails/ notifications/ Grades on all these online platforms as these would be your main platforms for receiving information and communication from the University, Student administration and your teachers.
-
20. Starting your Studies: Are all Excursions Mandatory and do I have to pay for them separately?
Yes, all Excursions are Mandatory and you will have to provide a doctors certificate in order to not atend. Yes please calculate between 100-300 Euros for Excursions every Semester.
-
21. Starting your Studies: What is the process for Exams and what do I need to do before the Exam?
For most of our exams and course submissions you will have to register yourself in the HIS-QIS Examination Portal.
