What could be better than being able to practically apply the knowledge you have learnt during your studies and making a contribution to a fairer world at the same time?

Design-build projects in architecture teaching are an innovative approach that combines theory, practice and research. Students take responsibility for the entire construction process - from conception to design and realisation. These projects promote a practice-orientated education by combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience and at the same time integrating social commitment.

The design-build approach allows architectural projects to be viewed holistically, with all phases being handled by an interdisciplinary team. This creates a learning environment in which students not only develop technical and design skills, but also gain an awareness of the social and cultural significance of architecture.

Participants in the projects broaden their intellectual horizons in a world of intercultural contexts, acquire technical, social and communication skills and learn to take responsibility for their decisions.

The results of this long-standing success story of student construction projects at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences include a school library and a vocational training centre in South Africa, a health and maternity clinic and a plant filter and solar plant in Guatemala, a community centre and a science lab in Nepal, a health clinic in Haiti and other student initiatives under the umbrella of UNITY.
