Reco_Fix - prototype earthquake-proof housing, 2016

Natural disasters cause destruction in underdeveloped regions every year. Reco_Fix was developed to offer the people affected rapid assistance in rebuilding their homes. The house is the first post-earthquake construction solution for earthquake-proof housing. A prototype was built on the grounds of the Paläon research and experience center in Schöningen in Lower Saxony. The house can be temporarily viewed by visitors and school classes at the Paläon Research and Experience Center.

Living on Levels - Kasirwa Earth House Building Workshop, Tanzania 2016

During the semester break of the 2016 summer semester, students had the opportunity to complete a 6-week construction internship (= 6 ECTS) in Tanzania, directly on Mount Kilimanjaro. In the artists' village of Kasirwa (Rombo District), a clay house prototype was built together with a local team of craftsmen. The main aim of the project was to significantly improve the critical and non-valuable opinion of current mud houses among the locals by highlighting the potential and aesthetics of local materials and demonstrating an environmentally conscious alternative to the expensive cement buildings with corrugated zinc roofing that have become the standard.

Brick by Brick - Classroom for Burmese refugee children, Thailand 2017

Rocky Mountain 2 School is located in the north of Thailand on the Burmese border and, like many areas there, is characterized by an increased influx of Burmese refugees. Around 130 pupils (from kindergarten to Year 8) currently attend this school. 41 of them have the opportunity to spend the night in the school's accommodation and others cross the border every day. Due to a lack of financial resources in the region, smaller schools are being closed and merged into large facilities. This leads to unresolved problems, especially for pupils from rural areas. It is therefore worth supporting the preservation of some smaller schools. The plan was to build a new school building for use as a classroom, but also as additional accommodation.

Playground Matters - DIY upcycling designs for School and Orphanage Playground, Haiti 2017-18

During the initial phase of the main "Haiti Project" - see: www.hs-anhalt.de/unity/projekt-haiti-2018.html - the cooperation partner Haiti-Nothilfe received funds allocated specifically to improve the outdoor infrastructure for the orphanage and the school with designated areas for sport activities and a playground. Students of "DIA - Master Architecture" took on this task and developed design proposals based on reclaiming local waste materials (tires, plastic bottles, etc.) as well as low-tech implementation strategies within this 2-semester project. Some of the proposals were realized through workshops with the kids and teens, led by a group of students on-site during four weeks in 2018.

SUSTAINABLE STRUCTURES
Since 2007, students at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences have been realizing pioneering construction projects in structurally weak regions around the world. The participants mainly come from the Architecture courses in Department 3 (Architecture, Facility Management and Geoinformation). In recent years, however, students and lecturers from other disciplines, such as Design, Ecotrophology and Process Engineering, have also been increasingly involved in the projects.
Thanks to interdisciplinary cooperation and comprehensive support, the student planning team is able to successfully master the complex requirements of these projects. A special feature of these projects is that the team is not only responsible for the structural planning, but also for the financing and the development of strategies and funding models.
The students are supported by committed professors and employees of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. The non-profit association Mirador e.V. from Leipzig is also on hand as an experienced partner. The members of the association, which emerged from the first projects, contribute their expertise in the planning and implementation of building and infrastructure projects in the context of development cooperation. Mirador e.V. was founded in order to continue and further develop the commitment beyond the studies in the long term.
