Our Technical Center for Applied Mechanics has been housed in a new building since April 2020. A vehicle hall, a dynamics laboratory and a modern communication and practical training area are located on two floors. Here, traditional mechanics, vehicle technology and modern methods of digital Mechanical Engineering are tested and brought to life in research and teaching.

The vehicle hall is equipped with a crane runway, lifting platform, wheel alignment, balancing equipment and a multi-purpose vehicle test bench. As a teaching and demonstration room, the laboratory has a large selection of vehicle technology models and thus makes practical experience literally tangible for students in the vehicle technology-oriented modules of the mechanical engineering course.
The new ergonomically improved arrangement of the vehicle technology testing equipment makes access to the lifting platform and vehicle test bench easier.

The multifunctional dynamics laboratory houses the Industry 4.0 Lab transmission test bench and a large resonance pulsator for determining the fatigue strength of large structural components. Both test benches were developed entirely at the Department of EMW (FB 6), from the initial idea through to implementation. In terms of content and expertise, both are pioneering. In addition to the benefits for research in the field of predictive maintenance, students can transfer all topics relating to vibrations, sensor technology and fatigue strength from theory to practice - of course also directly on the vehicle test bench.

The concept of the new technical centre is innovative in several respects: traditional elements of vehicle technology and machine dynamics meet digital support. Measurements on the drivetrain and chassis of a car, for example, can be carried out using computer-aided simulations on the digital twin, even at points that are inaccessible in reality. This gives students a profound, theoretical and practical overall understanding and optimally prepares them for the challenges of their future careers.

The student project launched in the summer semester to convert a traditional car into an electric vehicle is an expression of the new orientation of our mechanical engineering course.
As part of the lab for the "Fundamentals of Chassis Technology" module, students enjoy dismantling a Mercedes W201 and digitizing its components. Starting with the axle suspensions, the students get to know real chassis suspensions and at the same time use modern digitization tools. - But more on that later.
