Since August 1, 2017, Prof. Bernhard and a team of research assistants have been researching the development of materials and technologies for the direct production of multiple, ultra-thin silicon wafers. The ERDF project, in which the Halle-based company SmartMembranes is also involved, will initially run until October 31, 2020. As part of the project, the young researchers led by Prof. Bernhard are working on the scientific and technological foundations for the cost-efficient production of ultra-thin monocrystalline wafers with the aim of making them scalable, i.e. transferable to industrial production.
The aim of the MILLEFEUILLE project is to provide the scientific and technological basis for the cost-efficient and scalable production of ultra-thin monocrystalline silicon wafers, i.e. production that can be transferred to industry.
The focus of the project is on the development and evaluation of new processes and technologies for the production of ultra-thin monocrystalline silicon wafers (10 µm - 50 µm) and their effective texturing to achieve sufficient light absorption for use in photovoltaics.
