The so-called digital chain is to be illustrated in the teaching module. For this purpose, the computer is already used as a tool in the idea sketching phase and ideas are generated with the help of appropriate software applications.

A second possible idea approach is to use a physical hand model, which is converted into a digital model using a 3D scan.

Post-processing and building a cleanly constructed digital 3D model with the help of Rhino and Grasshopper expands the possibilities for evaluating and analyzing the design concept and enables the idea to be adapted and variants to be generated.

Various Grasshopper plug-ins are available for structural simulation (statics, acoustics, climate, etc.).

An intermediate step and important part of the digital chain is the realization of the models to scale by means of a 3D print. The knowledge gained from this can be used in prototype production, for example.

In addition to digital design and planning (in the first part), the robot-assisted production of prototypes is a second focus.

Production is carried out using industrial robots. The following manufacturing processes are available for this purpose

Milling - various milling/drilling bits possible. Different strategies (roughing, finishing). Material dependency.

Hot wire cutting - different milling/drilling bits possible. Different strategies (roughing, finishing). Material dependency

3D printing - different milling/drilling bits possible. Different strategies (roughing, finishing). Material dependency

Manufacturing includes all steps from machine setup, material and workpiece selection, tool selection and the manufacturing process to the generation of the machine code (G-code) and surface finishing (by hand).

A more advanced approach is to monitor the production and assembly of components using a VR approach.
