A Taste of the Future
Innovative food, sustainable raw materials and the future of our diet.
What will the future taste like? Can algae shape our food of tomorrow? And how was beer actually brewed over 1500 years ago? Answers can be found in the creative workshop of the Department of Applied Biosciences and Process Engineering. In this workshop, visitors can taste, discover and participate for themselves.
What awaits you:
- New food ideas from research
- Tasting products such as algae liqueur, Germanic beer and crispies
- Exchange with students and instructors

One focus is on the fascinating world of microalgae. The Algae Biotechnology Competence Center at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Köthen has been one of the leading research locations in Germany for over 25 years. Research is carried out here into how algae can be used as sustainable raw materials, for example for healthy food, pharmaceutical products or bio-based materials. The potential of these inconspicuous organisms is demonstrated on site. At the smoothie bike, guests can get active themselves and "cycle" their own smoothie, while algae-based cookies and a cup of algae ice cream are available for tasting.
There are also exciting things to discover in the area of food innovation: Food Technology students present newly developed algae crispies: crispy snacks made from corn flour, oilseeds and nutrient-rich wakame algae. They combine a special taste with valuable ingredients and show what a healthy and sustainable diet can look like.
Another highlight is the journey into the past of the art of brewing: what did beer taste like in Germanic times? Using historical recipes and modern processes, students have developed a so-called "Germanic beer". Herbs are used that were used for brewing over 1500 years ago and give the beer a special grades. Visitors can taste this unusual specialty as well as the algae crispies.
