Passionate student makes teaching in a virtual world realistic
As part of her Master's thesis, Rong Huang developed a VR application for a virtual biotech house. Her final project is therefore also a collaboration between Departments 5, 6 and 7. The VR application illustrates the importance of Biotechnology in everyday life in a practical and vivid way and offers untrained biotechnological users the opportunity to gain their first experience of manufacturing biotechnological products in a virtual environment. It also supports advanced biotechnologists in preparing for practical experiments and processes in the laboratory.
The VR application was developed using the example of yoghurt production. It initially offers a training room for people who are experiencing VR for the first time. After getting to know the controller and its functions, learners can make their own yoghurt in a virtual environment. Finally, there is the opportunity to take a test to test the knowledge acquired and earn a virtual reward. The immersive simulation creates a lasting experience and thus combines practical process knowledge with theoretical teaching. The tool is already available for use in teaching.
In addition, work is currently underway on another wine production application and a level management approach to support the experience of various biotechnological content. The Biotech House, which emerged from a student's final thesis, showed such great potential for use in teaching that Praxwerk is now supporting its further development/expansion and scientific monitoring.
