What is a security incident?

Please report any IT security incidents to the information security officer!

A security incident includes:

  • Physical damage (e.g., loss of university-owned technology)
  • Failure of (technical) infrastructure in critical areas (access control system, network segment)
  • Increased occurrence of malicious software (malware)
  • Technical attack by unauthorized third parties (e.g., scanners, sniffers, DoS)
  • Compromise of functions or misconfigurations (e.g., misuse of access rights; exception: in cases of imminent danger, where the information owner and the data protection officer must be informed)
  • Compromise of information by violating data security in the protection of personal data through destruction, loss, alteration, or unauthorized disclosure (involving the data protection officer is essential!)
  • Spread of unwanted content and unauthorized mass email distribution from the university network

 

What should I do?

When reporting an information security incident, as a member of the university (not an admin or decision-maker), please note the following procedure for the use of university property:

1. Stop working on the device.

2. Report the incident to the responsible IT support person or IT administrator, or call extension 5500.

3. Provide the following information:

  • Who is calling?
  • Which IT system is affected?
  • What did you observe?
  • When did it happen?
  • Where is the system located?

4. Wait for further instructions.

5. The responsible support person will fill out the information security incident form for acute/critical incidents.
