INPAKT

Innovative LPWAN platform for energy-optimized data transport in wireless IoT networks

The INPAKT project aims to develop a new, highly energy-optimized Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) protocol for sensor networks with significantly lower energy consumption than the currently used LoRaWAN, SigFox, NB-IoT or LTE-M protocols. For this purpose, a new modulation method is being developed that reduces the power consumption of the end nodes, extends the transmission phases of the data and dynamically changes receivers depending on the type of data to be transmitted, which significantly extends the battery life of the device (by approx. 30-34%). In this way, a sensor can be operated in the field or otherwise in open space, at distances of up to 12-15 km, with a battery for several years with a standard AA battery and send data into an IoT environment.

Scientific tasks:

  1. Systematic analysis of existing LPWAN protocols and technologies and their power consumption characteristics
  2. Experimental investigation of key performance indicators (energy consumption, reliability, throughput, latency)
  3. Identification of structural weaknesses of current energy consumption models and relevant potential savings
  4. Development and optimization of energy-efficient protocols and algorithms
  5. Research into the use of machine learning for predictive ADR mechanisms to predict optimal data rates
