Mensa-Analyse (Analysis of the canteen offer in Köthen and other local locations)

The project focuses on analyzing the meal offerings at Köthen and other Studentenwerk Halle Mensa locations. The primary objective is to examine and compare different dishes based on their ingredients, frequency of repetition, meal categories (vegetarian, vegan, meat-based), and pricing trends over time. To achieve this, a web scraper was developed using Python's BeautifulSoup to extract meal data from Studentenwerk Halle Official Website spanning from January 2021 to February 2025. The collected data was stored in a structured PostgreSQL database after preprocessing, filtering, and categorization.

Further a Tableau dashboard was designed to visualize these insights interactively. The dashboard allows users to explore trends in meal frequency, price variations, and dietary distributions efficiently and toggle between city level, mensa level and dishes level dashboards which also have drill-down functionalities. This project was conducted as part of the Modul Projekt Data Science in Winter Semester 24/25. The findings aim to provide valuable insights into student meal preferences and aid in improving menu planning and pricing strategies at Mensa locations in the near future. The project can be expanded further when confidential data, like the number of dishes sold and the number students dining in on a particular date in a particular mensa, are available to focus on what people prefer and will help in increasing sales and stop food wastage.
