A children's library for the ‘Montic’ Primary School
In the winter semester of 2006, students at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences initiated the first DesignBuild project based on the principle of action-orientated architecture teaching. The Austrian association SARCH (Sustainable Architecture), which had expertise in the realisation of municipal education and health infrastructure in South Africa, acted as the central cooperation partner. The project focussed on the Montic Primary School in the township of Katlehong (60 km south of Johannesburg), an educational facility run by SARCH with 560 learners aged 3-17 years. This location was chosen due to existing transdisciplinary cooperation structures and successful student building projects in the past.
An interdisciplinary group of students led by Prof. Dr Claus Dießenbacher used this project-based form of learning to expand practical professional and transcultural skills. After a participatory needs assessment on site - including stakeholder analysis and contacting local construction stakeholders - the design phase for a children's library began. The project aimed to improve the quality of the school infrastructure in line with the principles of development cooperation: needs orientation, local resource mobilisation and capacity development through knowledge transfer.
