Excursion to the natural heritage area “Oranienbaumer Heide” on July 3, 2020

Subject: Preservation of dwarf shrub heaths (LRT 4030) and base-rich sandy grasslands (LRT 6120*) – Year-round grazing with Heck cattle and Koniks

Lead: Heiner Hensen, Mark Pfau, Marieke Müller

Meeting place:
8:00 at porter’s lodge of Bernburg Campus, carpooling or
9:00 at the northern entrance of the area (directly at the B 107), ends at approx. 16:00

The excursion site is the DBU Natural Heritage Area "Oranienbaumer Heide" east of Dessau-Roßlau (Saxony-Anhalt). Due to many years of military use, valuable habitats with occurrences of rare and endangered animal and plant species of open and semi-open land were able to develop and be preserved. The goal of the excursion is to present the grazing concept with megaherbivores and selected results from the last 11 years of research. The excursion will also provide insight into the flora and fauna of dwarf shrub heaths, base-rich sandy grasslands and pioneer grey hair-grass flats.

Please bring clothes suitable for the weather, sturdy shoes and lunch! Due to the Corona pandemic, please also remember to bring masks in case the minimum distance cannot be maintained at all times. The excursion will be recognized as an excursion day (please bring excursion verification form!).

To form carpools, student need to be willing to use private cars.
