All international students who begin studies for a specialist degree at a German university must have health insurance coverage. No enrolment takes place without proof of health insurance coverage.
Health Insurance
-
Younger than 30 years?
Then German statutory health insurance is the easiest option. Entry or travel health insurance is not sufficient for enrolment.
-
Older than 30 years?
Then in Germany there are the available options of voluntary statutory health insurance (continuation of statutory health insurance) or private health insurance.
Important! (Recommendation): Persons older than 30 years should always conclude a contract with a private health insurance (e.g. Mawista) for at least 24 months (better even 5 years). Cancellation is possible at any time without any problems, provided that the period of notice is observed. BUT: If more cost-intensive treatments are pending, the private health insurance company cannot simply cancel the contract in between.
General Practitioner or Hospital/Emergency Department
-
General Practitioner
Takes care of all common sicknesses.
If you have a fever, cough, little aches or a cold you go to your general practitioner. The physician can issue a sickness note.
-
Hospital/Emergency Department
Is responsible for emergencies and accidents, but not a simple cold.
In case of severe pain or very high fever, you can of course also go to the hospital/emergency room. Here, depending on the emergency and urgency, there may be long waiting times on site.
