A Place in a Dormitory

Dormitory rooms are limited at the specific campus and it is required to apply for them. Applying does not guarantee you a place in a dorm at the beginning of the semester, as many students are interested and there may be waiting lists. You can find more information about student accommodation at the Studentenwerk Halle website.

Rented Flat or Room in a Shared Flat

As a student you can also rent a flat. The rent depends on the size of the flat. In most cases, rented flats are not furnished. In some cases, a kitchen is available which can be used for a monthly fee or taken over from the previous owner. There is often a minimum rental period in the rental contract.

In accommodation offers you will often find a differentiation between cold and warm rent. The cold rent is simply the price for the use of the living area. The warm rent is this amount plus the utilities (gas, water, running costs, rubbish, etc.). In addition, you may have to pay for internet, insurance or, for example, the TV licence fee. You should also inform yourself about this.

It is more difficult to rent a flat without being on site, as the landlord usually wants to meet the potential tenant and the rental contract has to be signed. If you are looking for a short-term stay or a temporary accommodation, you can also take advantage of the possibility of staying in a guesthouse/hotel.

Caution!

Tenancies should only ever be entered into with a written contract. Cash payments of rent or security deposits are generally legal, but highly suspicious. Without a written contract there is no way to prove the tenancy or to reclaim the security deposit.

The rule of thumb in Germany is: Put everything in writing!
