Course content and objectives
Graduates of a first engineering degree program are trained by Anhalt University of Applied Sciences to take on senior and management positions or for more scientifically-focused positions under consideration of the experience they have already gained from previous professional activity. The career-integrated master’s program goes into more depth in the computer aided technical disciplines, production and process-oriented topics, and business methods. These new skills, together with the contacts made during the on-site phases, are to contribute to analyzing technical and business processes more quickly and developing solutions. After graduation, there are excellent career prospects in research and development divisions, in (production) predevelopment, in technological staff departments, in liaison functions between development and production, or in technology consulting.

Department project in mold making “Saftjunge” in conjunction with the city of Zörbig (July 2021)
The department of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Management supported the city of Zörbig in producing a duplicate sculpture as part of a community service project. First, the sculpture, which only consists of separate parts, was scanned and modeled using reverse engineering techniques.
A mold was then milled for the CAD model. The production was summarized in a video:

Successful accreditation of the career-integrated master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering (September 2019)
The master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering (career-integrated) has been successfully accredited without conditions. After a nine-month evaluation process, the German Accreditation Council confirmed the qualification goals of the career-integrated master's degree program on September 17, 2019.
A group of reviewers consisting of professors, an industry representative and a student gained a detailed impression of the degree program during an on-site inspection in Köthen as well as through submitted documents. The criteria examined during the review included, for example, the program concept and feasibility, the subject-specific content and the resources available.
Due to the accreditation, graduates of the program will be able to take on positions in all career groups in the German public service, for example, higher public service as public servants (Beamte). The degree program focuses on extending engineering expertise in the areas of product development and design, materials engineering, production engineering and CAx technologies as well as on expanding business management knowledge. The technical content focuses, in particular, on digitization in Mechanical Engineering. With knowledge of business management methods, graduates can meet and further develop specialist management challenges.
Those interested in the newly accredited career-integrated master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering can apply by September 30, 2019. Students can expect a clearly structured three-year degree program with three attendance phases on the weekend per semester, interesting exchanges with fellow students who are fully immersed in their professional lives and guaranteed small group sizes.

Where do our students come from?
Our students are predominantly from Germany. An above-average number of students come from the metropolitan areas of Bamberg or Northern Bavaria/Upper Franconia, Chemnitz, Leipzig, Berlin, Magdeburg, Hanover/Brunswick and Anhalt. Since the summer semester of 2022, the career-integrated master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering has remained international due to the job-related location of a student in the Austrian state of Salzburg.
Köthen is easily accessible by car and train. The A9, A14 and A36 freeways are in the immediate vicinity and the intercity train connection between Dresden-Leipzig-Halle-Magdeburg-Hanover-Dortmund-Cologne stops in Köthen. For example, Köthen can be reached via train from Bamberg (Upper Franconia) in 1 h 44 min. Other highly industrialized regions such as Baden-Württemberg are also only a few hours away.
Example travel times:
Berlin – Köthen: car/train approx. 2 h
Dortmund – Köthen: car/train 4 h (direct connection) up to 4.5 h
Frankfurt – Köthen: car/train approx. 3 h
Hanover – Köthen: car/train (direct connection) approx. 2 h
Heilbronn – Köthen: car/train approx. 4.5 h
Munich – Köthen: car/train approx. 4.5 h
Stuttgart – Köthen: car approx. 5 h
Where do the engineers studying with us work?
Our students work in almost every technical industry and for a wide variety of employers. In the following you will find an overview.
- Large corporation 11%
- Medium-sized companies 56%
- Institutes/universities 33%
What does “career-integrated” mean for the bachelor's degree program in Mechanical Engineering at Anhalt University?
The following features characterize the career-integrated master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences:
- Long independent study phases for the modules.
- Combination of distance learning components with three on-campus attendance phases (Thu, Fri, Sat) per semester.
- Practical range of subjects mainly from general mechanical engineering with design, calculation, manufacturing and management components. This means that, in comparison to highly specialized courses of study, links to many industries are available.
- Support for the processing of individual tasks with professional relevance in projects, in the final thesis or in module-accompanying documents.
- Long-term planning of dates (class dates published at least 1 year in advance)
- The main objective of the attendance phases is the direct exchange with fellow students and lecturers as well as the use of laboratories (e.g. for projects).
- Program will be fully online (distance learning) and in case of contact restrictions / contact prohibition, similar to the winter semester 2020/21 and summer semester 2021. Therefore, acquiring ECTS points (credits) is guaranteed at all times.
- A leave of absence free of tuition fees is provided for unexpected professional commitments.
- Group sizes in the technical modules up to a maximum of 15 people, in the business modules up to 30 people (usually significantly less).
Is it possible to “try” individual subjects?
If you would like to get a personal impression of individual classes, please write an email to fmm(at)hs-anhalt.de. Please explain your area of interest briefly. After consultation with the responsible lecturer, you will receive information about trial participation.
For further organizational matters (dates, educational leave, access to teaching materials, digital offers...) or technical questions (module contents, recognition of course work, technical equipment of the labs/pools...), please contact Ms. Kircheis (Degree Program Coordinator) and Mr. Landenberger (Degree Program Advisor).
What are the advantages of a state university?
Anhalt University of Applied Sciences is a state university. Offering continuing education courses is one of the tasks of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences enshrined in the Higher Education Act. The university is not allowed to profit from the fees of the career-integrated master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering and this is the reason why the Master in Mechanical Engineering is one of the least expensive career-integrated programs.
The fees are used in full for the studies and the degree program. For example, visiting lecturers from professional practice, software licenses and digital textbooks are all paid from the tuition fees. From the Springer-Verlag alone, more than 20,000 textbooks are available in digital format to students.
Students of the program also have access to the complete equipment of an engineering department. This includes our own 3D printers, CNC milling machines (see following picture), equipment for materials testing, transmission test benches, test vehicles etc. This equipment is regularly used by direct and distance learning students for projects and final theses. The current introduction video features the university and selected labs and equipment:

Why can the career-integrated master's degree program not be found on some comparison portals on the Internet?
The tuition fees for the career-integrated master's program in Mechanical Engineering are to be used directly for teaching. For this reason, the program will not spend any money on advertising measures on the internet in the summer semester of 2022. The career-integrated master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering is listed (free of charge) on the following comparison portals.
What do students studying a career-integrated degree program have to consider regarding their health insurance obligation?
The university may only admit applicants with health insurance. The notification to the university is done electronically – but not automatically – by statutory health insurance companies (also for privately insured people). There are essentially three variants to distinguish between:
a) In the case of people insured by law in Germany, the transmission will be initiated upon request upon presentation of the registration certificate.
b) Legally insured people from the EU can send a scan of their European health insurance card, a scan of their identity card and their registration certificate to a statutory health insurance company (usually AOK) in Germany. The company will verify and transmit the data to the university upon request.
c) Privately insured people from the EU and Germany can transmit a full insurance certificate issued by the private health insurance company to a statutory health insurance company in Germany instead of a scan of the insurance card. Further procedure as for b).
