Nature Conservation and Landscape Planning (M.Sc.)

Department of Agriculture, Ecotrophology, and Landscape Development

Course content and objectives

The master’s program in Nature Conservation and Landscape Planning, which is unique in Germany in this form, builds on the bachelor’s degree and focuses exclusively on current requirements of nature conservation. This was also confirmed in the WWF study on nature conservation education at German universities.

During the program, students get intensive, in-depth knowledge of ecology, flora-vegetation, and fauna. At the same time, existing knowledge of landscape planning tools and skills in processing data with the help of modern information systems are further developed. Guest lecturers who are nature conservation practitioners are included in courses. A special focus is placed on global aspects and European legal provisions. Student projects or master’s theses are worked on in cooperation with nature conservation agencies, NGOs, and numerous partners from the area of applied research. Furthermore, students have the chance to work in the university's research and development projects as student assistants.

Graduates of the program are able to tackle complex tasks to conserve nature and landscapes with the background of societal demands in various scientific and practical fields. The completed master’s program in Nature Conservation and Landscape Planning also offers excellent opportunities in Germany and abroad across the entire spectrum of nature conservation and landscape planning. Possible areas of activity include scientific and research institutions but also nature conservation administration at the federal and state level, large conservation areas (e.g. national parks, biosphere reserves), national and international environmental and nature conservation organizations, and expert, planning, and engineering agencies.
