Course content and objectives

The degree program
Naturopathy is an extremely old science and perhaps for this very reason it is becoming more and more popular in our fast-moving times. It is based on fundamental medical contexts, but combines these with the aid of psychosocial aspects and natural active ingredients from plants and foods, for example, to form a very holistic view of the human being.
The bachelor's degree program in naturopathy aims to enable professionals, primarily from the nursing and therapeutic fields, to treat their patients using a holistic naturophathic approach.
To this end, the degree program imparts comprehensive allopathic medical basics, psychosocial and methodological skills as well as the ability to deal with classical naturopathic applications in a scientifically sound manner. The degree program paves the way for graduates to become responsible therapists at the interface between medicine and naturopathy, who are aware of the limits and dangers of naturopathic procedures, and who can implement effective therapy methods appropriate for a specific target group and situation.
Graduates will be in a position to complement allopathic medical treatments with effective aspects of naturopathy, such as nutrition, botany and communication, to develop safe treatment strategies in this field and to implement them successfully with the appropriate permission (e.g. Heilpraktikererlaubnis). With a bachelor's degree in naturopathy, graduates will be able to work in a steadily growing market for holistic therapies complementary to allopathic medicine, or devote themselves to teaching or research. At the same time, the degree program offers comprehensive preparation for the examination and certification according to the Heilpraktikergesetz. Following the course, graduates who have successfully passed the examination can practice medicine in accordance with the Heilpraktikergesetz (Heilpraktiker Act).
Additional Information
-
Modules
The degree program is module-based. A module is a content-related course where students are required to take an examination or submit some other type of verifiable academic achievement. In addition to the compulsory modules, elective modules with a certain number of credits must be completed. The number of credits depends on the average amount of work involved for the respective module. The workload includes self-study, participation in consultations, time spent preparing for and following up on consultations, preparation for examinations, and the completion of course and assessed work, including internships.
The normal program length is seven semesters. In six semesters of study, students will complete a total of 25 compulsory modules, as well as four elective modules, which are selected from a pool of elective modules. The seventh semester is reserved for the preparation and defense of the Bachelor thesis.
Students will complete compulsory and elective modules following the curriculum (see Appendix 1 of the examination and (degree) program regulations). The curriculum assumes 4-5 modules per semester.
-
General information
The degree is a career-integrated program. Such a degree program offers flexible learning times and is therefore easy to combine with professional activities. In addition, students can learn in a home environment.
Students will be provided with digital learning materials for the degree program which will allow students to structure their learning independently and so optimize their examination preparation. In addition, consultations are offered which take place in the form of on-site events at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Bernburg and/or as online seminars. Here students have the opportunity to exchange ideas with the lecturers and other students, to ask questions and to consolidate and enhance their knowledge. Depending on the module, 12 to 18 consultation hours are included in the curriculum. As a rule, students are invited to attend either one weekend seminar (Friday/Saturday) per module or online seminars scheduled throughout the semester. The consultation dates for each semester are published in advance via the schedule in the intranet of the university website.
Throughout the program students will receive individual support from the Degree Program Coordinator. The Degree Program Coordinator is the first point of contact for all non-subject-related questions and the person who coordinates cooperation between lecturers and students. The lecturers responsible for individual modules provide content-related support.
All modules conclude with an examination in the form of written examinations, oral examinations or assignments as well as presentations. Examinations are taken at the end of each semester during examination week. The exact examination dates will be published in advance via the examination schedule in the intranet of the university website.
Classes and corresponding examinations are offered on an annual basis. Students can begin their studies in the winter semester, starting on October 1 of each year.
-
Flexible study model
We give students the opportunity to complete the career-integrated bachelor's degree program in naturopathy as their time allows. Instead of the standard 5 modules per semester, students can take fewer modules and complete them in the usual manner during the examination week. An example of a study plan for a Flexible Study Model is designed so that students complete the Bachelor's degree in 12 semesters instead of 7.
For students who are considering extending their degree program, we recommend the following study plan: Example of a Flexible Study Model. Generally we recommend the given procedure. However, individual variations are also possible, but with the understanding that the modules are assigned to a specific semester (summer or winter) and can therefore only be offered once a year. Students can find out how the costs are calculated if following the prescribed study plan as well as for the Flexible Study Model over the 12 semesters in our Guidelines for a Flexible Study Model.
-
On-site studies
The self-study program is supplemented by face-to-face events and/or online seminars. Students will be invited to attend either one weekend seminar (Friday/Saturday) per module or online seminars scheduled throughout the semester The dates will be announced in advance via the schedule in the intranet of the university website, so that students can fit them in around their work commitments. Students following the prescribed study plan will have a maximum of 5 seminar weekends (5x2 days) or several online seminars per semester.
Attendance at individual consultations is not mandatory. However, we recommend participation, because the personal exchange between students and lecturer facilitates the clarification of questions as well as consolidating and enhancing knowledge. In addition, the application of knowledge acquired forms the basis of many consultations and is an enrichment beyond the learning materials.
Students will have to plan a maximum of 6 days per semester to be present in person for the examinations at the end of the semester at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. The basis for passing the examinations is the respective learning material for the module. The examination week is arranged in such a way that one examination per day is scheduled for modules offered in that semester. The aim is always to hold the examinations on consecutive days in order to keep the number of days away from work as low as possible. The location of the examination week for the winter semester is mid-March, for the summer semester mid-September.
-
Applying for a semester off
As a student of a career-integrated program you have the possibility to apply for a semester off. The substantiated application for a semester off must be submitted to the Student Service Centre (SSC) by March 15 (for the summer semester) or September 15 (for the winter semester) at the latest. Tuition fees are waived for a semester off. In addition, students who have been granted a semester off will not be allowed to take examinations or submit other work for their degree programs. However, students will be allowed to resit examinations.
