Main focus

Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

Methods of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence play an important role in our bachelor’s and master’s programs, but especially in the context of the Master Data Science. When teaching data science skills, we always focus on appropriate practical experience. In semester projects, students independently develop solutions to practical problems, directly applying the technical knowledge they have acquired. Whether it is data analysis, data management or data communication, the projects are diverse and often implemented in collaboration with a variety of application domains.

In regular project modules, students gain practical experience and apply course content in a hands-on manner. Interdisciplinary topics broaden the scope of vision to different application domains.

Student projects from the field of Data Science

Since 2002, student teams have been successfully participating in the Data Mining Cup, an annual international competition. In commercial applications, Data Mining enables the discovery of patterns in mass data, enabling profitable predictions and actions in marketing. In the student data analyst competition, the team that makes the most accurate predictions from the data they are given wins.

Looking back

At the 20th Data Mining Cup, the teams from our department did very well. Out of more than 150 teams from 28 countries, the top 10 teams were invited to Berlin to participate in the Retail Intelligence Summit 2019, where they presented their findings in the form of a poster and a talk to the audience. Just by participating, it was clear that a place in the top 10 had been secured. The exact placement was announced in the evening. As a department, we can be very proud of our 7th and 4th finishes, because the competition came from ETH Zurich, TU Munich, RWTH Aachen, KIT, among others. The latter ranking also means that the best German team came from our department (and at the same time the second best European team).

Bernd Krause received a special gift from the organizers for his many years of successful involvement in the Data Mining Cup.
