Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
Methods of Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence play an important role in our bachelor’s and master’s programs, but especially in the context of the Master Data Science. When teaching data science skills, we always focus on appropriate practical experience. In semester projects, students independently develop solutions to practical problems, directly applying the technical knowledge they have acquired. Whether it is data analysis, data management or data communication, the projects are diverse and often implemented in collaboration with a variety of application domains.
Students gain practical experience and apply course content in regular project modules. Interdisciplinary topics broaden the perspective on various application domains.

Student projects from the field of Data Science
Since 2002, student teams have successfully participated in the Data Mining Cup, an annual international competition. Data mining makes it possible to uncover patterns in mass data and thus to make profitable forecasts and marketing campaigns in commercial applications. In the competition between student data analysts, the team that generates the best predictions from the given data wins.
Looking back
The teams from our Department did very well at the 20th Data Mining Cup. Of the 150+ teams from 28 countries, the best 10 teams were invited to Berlin to take part in the Retail Intelligence Summit 2019 and present their results to the auditorium in the form of a poster and a presentation.
Just by participating, it was already clear that a place in the top 10 had been achieved. The exact ranking was announced in the evening. As a department, we can be very proud of our 7th and 4th place, as the competition came from ETH Zurich, TU Munich, RWTH Aachen and KIT, among others. The latter ranking also means that the best German team came from our Department (also the second best European team).
Bernd Krause was presented with a special gift by the organizers for his many years of successful involvement in the Data Mining Cup.
