Projects, competitions and student work in the fields of Media Informatics and Game Development

The degree program “Applied Computer Science - Digital Media and Game Development” trains students to become IT specialists without neglecting other important facets of professional life: Besides the mathematical/technical foundations, there is a strong connection to digital media and especially to developing computer games. In this way, you will learn the creative use of audiovisual media and the related work processes of the creative industry. The ability to program and the ability to conceive and produce media content are interdependent in this program and form the basis of the comprehensive and universal educational profile.

Defender of Streamer Kingdom

  • The game projects shown here are prototypes that were developed over a 15-week period in parallel with other courses.

    ______

In this project, four students set out to create a game where the community of viewers could play against the streamer on Twitch. The students chose a Tower Defense game. The streamer owns a castle that he must defend against their community. This can be done by upgrading rooms, adding towers to the castle, and strengthening the defense team. The community decides which and how many attackers attack the castle through chat commands.

Strayve

The game tells the story of an unnamed character. They survived a crash with their spaceship and now find themselves alone on an unknown world. Their communications unit is damaged, so they must survive on this planet with no prospect of reinforcements or supplies.

They set out to gather resources and get the ship running again, but dangerous alien robots stand in their way, unwilling to let the stranger escape alive. In a Tower Defense game, the robots need to be destroyed, which will then drop materials to repair the spaceship.

Tower Defense

A first-person tower defense game without real towers?

A horde of goblins is trying to destroy the player's castle. The player's task is to prevent this from happening. To do so, they cannot build and upgrade towers like in a tower defense game. They can move freely in the world and destroy the objects in the world and hurl them at the goblins, destroying or stopping them. The Goblins come in waves from two sides, so keeping them at bay seems easy at first. But that changes very quickly…

Cong Minh

The nameless heroine "Cong Minh" (Chinese for "justice") fights to rid the world of all injustice. Throughout the game, she faces new villains and must make her way to her destination. The game is a classic 2D jump n' run game. Fighting and skillful maneuvering through the levels gives the player the opportunity to collect points. Player-triggered actions should not require complex input. Instead, a clever combination of the character's basic abilities (running, jumping, punching, sliding) should lead to success.
