1st semester

Grundlagen der Denkmalpflege
The first module seeks to expand and intensify the art historical, architectural, archaeological and theoretical knowledge acquired in the bachelor's degree program concerning monument preservation, and thereby to enable student to think systematically about the fields of action in the preservation of historical monuments.
The module introduces students to specific monument preservation issues and teaches basic legal knowledge of the German Denkmalschutzgesetz (German Monument Protection Act).

A-Epochen der Kunst und Archäologie I
The 2nd to 4th A-modules, exclusively intended for students with a background in construction or the natural sciences, are focused on providing fundamental and introductory knowledge of art history and archaeology from prehistoric to modern times, as well as on the development of network thinking.
Students will gain insight into the methodology of archaeology and art history through a variety of lectures. For this purpose, exemplary archaeological and art historical works and monuments will be explored and classified in their historical context.

B-Gebäudelehre, Baukonstruktion und Baumanagement
The 2nd to 4th B-modules, exclusively intended for students with a background in humanities programs in archaeology, art history or related fields, are focused on providing fundamental and introductory knowledge of building design, building construction and management, as well as on the development of network thinking.
Students will gain insight into constructional interrelationships, construction processes, planning and legal principles through various lectures. For this purpose, students will be trained in recognizing, interpreting and evaluating architecturally-relevant contexts, relationships and concepts.

Methodologie der Denkmalpflege I
In the seventh module, students will expand and intensify the historical and theoretical knowledge acquired in the bachelor's program. Students will analyze monuments in terms of structural design and building history and will acquire knowledge of historical building constructions, building materials and renovations.
The module offers access to specific monument conservation issues and provides the necessary knowledge. This knowledge will provide the foundation for analytical and synthetic thematization. Theoretical and practical assignments will be used to teach the basics of design, technology and building analysis used in the preservation of historical monuments as well as in architectural research. The results of these assignments will be presented in smaller presentations.
2nd semester

Praktikum in der Denkmalpflege
In this module (elective module), students will gain practical experience in monument preservation by working in various areas of state institutions (e.g. Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie Sachsen-Anhalt/Saxony-Anhalt agency for monument preservation and archaeology), state foundations, architectural and restoration firms. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in internships abroad.

Praxisprojekt
This module teaches survey work, laser measurement, architectural visualization and excavation techniques, prospecting methods, documentation methods and video documentation options with the help of a teaching excavation, construction documentation and a film project.
By participating in the above-mentioned projects, students will learn how to confidently handle technological and digital examination media. The focus is on recording, documenting and evaluating buildings in all their components as well as archaeological excavations with their finds and features.
As part of this module, a 3-week teaching excavation takes place in the 2nd semester.
3rd semester

Vertiefung Fachwissen Kunst und Archäologie
In this elective module, students may freely choose from the master's degree program catalog of the Institute for European Art History and Archaeologies at MLU.
Students will deepen their subject knowledge and analytical skills based on selected subjects. In addition, they will practice working with scientific literature and will apply subject-specific methods and theories.

Vertiefung Fachwissen Cultural Heritage
In this elective module, students can freely choose from the master's degree classes catalog of the Philosophische Fakultät I (faculty of humanities, mlu).
The topic of cultural heritage as a modern phenomenon of society's treatment of cultural assets, including traditional monuments, is increasingly becoming a research focus for a variety of humanities subjects. To this end, MLU has developed – specifically in the Philosophische Fakultät I (Faculty of Humanities) – a corresponding network area between history, ethnology and the social sciences, a subject area which is increasingly a topic of teaching focus.
The aim of the module is to deepen cultural heritage as a field of research in contemporary and historical sciences, as well as to further the concept of cultural heritage from the specific point of view of different subject areas such as history, ethnology and the social sciences.

Methodologie in der Denkmalpflege III
In this module you will analyze monuments in their construction phases, and you will acquire knowledge of archival science, archival work, documentation, reconstruction and epigraphy.

Denkmalmanagement
You will acquire knowledge connected with the public representation of the goals of preserving historical monuments, as well as with the goals contained in historical monument law, and will become confident in the use of digital media for documentation and presentation.
The focus here is on historical monument law at state, national and European levels.

Aktuelle Probleme und Theorien der Denkmalpflege
In this elective module, you will study current problems and theories of monument preservation.
In a series of lectures, you will discuss current theories, topics and problems related to monument preservation in their historical dimensions, as well as non-European monument preservation.
4th semester

Master’s thesis
The final examination consists of a paper and an oral examination in the 4th semester.
Students should be able to demonstrate that they can independently and coherently work on and present a topic of their own choice from the field of monument preservation, using scientific methods within a period of 4 months.

Colloquium
Students will be required to defend their master’s thesis in a presentation. The presentation may include both analog and digital media.
In this final oral examination, the student must present the results of the written project and discuss and elaborate this project in a problem-oriented and application-oriented manner.
The final oral examination usually lasts 30 minutes and takes place at the end of the fourth semester.Including the assessed coursework in the fourth semester, the academic degree of Master of Science in Heritage Management (MScHM) is awarded with a total of 120 ECTS credits.
