Specialization in the bachelor’s degree program, Business Studies

Well-educated and experienced graduates with a business degree are in high demand in all sectors of the economy. Indeed, all products and services available on the market were developed using the specialist knowledge and skills possessed by experts in business administration. At the various hierarchical levels of company activity, graduates are required to demonstrate their knowledge of planning, controlling and the monitoring of business processes. In the specialization area of General Business Administration, you will acquire innovative and practice-oriented specialized knowledge, which can then be expanded according to your interests through the selection of specialization modules. These modules deal with topics including sustainable business management, business start-ups, current logistics standards, digital transformation, innovation in various business areas, as well as employee motivation and work psychology. These topics are also taught using software solutions established in the business world.

Modules of the specialization

  • Unternehmensgründung

    In this module, students will learn about the various aspects of business start-ups. What needs to be considered in the planning process, what are the financial implications, and how can I develop a business plan? This module also teaches competitive perspectives and core skills for analyzing business ideas. These analytic techniques include competitive analysis, niche definition methods, competitive business model development and process analytical skills.

  • Nachhaltige Unternehmensführung

    Resource scarcity, climate change, social and economic sustainability issues are becoming increasingly important for companies and corporate management. In this module, students will acquire the basics of sustainability and sustainable corporate management including how to integrate sustainability goals into strategic management and controlling, as well as how to apply theoretical methods to practical case studies.

  • Unternehmensplanspiel

    The module, “Unternehmensplanspiel”, will enable students to think in a holistic and complex manner regarding the fields of logistics and production. Using case studies, students will independently make improvements to production and communication processes. Through the teaching of soft skills, students will learn about the results of their actions and thus strengthen their decision-making skills.

  • Arbeits- und Organisationspsychologie

    Communication psychology, leadership theories, conflict management, personality development and coaching are just some of the contents of this module. Participants will learn the foundations of psychology, communication psychology and self-leadership, will learn to recognize the relevance of psychological factors influencing people and the organizational system, and will develop awareness of complex interactions. In addition, foundational methods for self-reflection and leadership will be acquired and applied.

  • Businessplanübung

    This module includes developing a start-up idea, creating a business plan, determining market potential, formulating a financial plan and much more. Students will be able to independently create a business plan to ensure the development of their start-up ideas including the planning to implement them. With their acquired skills, students will be able to prepare an independent, economically viable start-up or a part-time business venture either as a student or following graduation.

  • Internationale Logistik

    Students will acquire an overview of the complexity of coordination services in the context of global value networks. This module teaches systems thinking, thinking in cause-effect (cause) relationships, international supply chain management, as well as logistics solutions illustrating global transportation needs and current developments in international logistics.

  • Nachhaltigkeits- und Umweltmanagement

    Companies are increasingly expected to address the issue of sustainability and fulfill their social responsibility. Students will recognize that long-term economic success can only be secured when ecological framework conditions and social aspects are taken into account. In addition, environmental management and sustainable business practices will be presented as necessary conditions for the sustained positive development of companies. Students will be able to analyze the value chain (procurement, production, distribution, logistics, disposal) in terms of sustainability and environmental protection and will be able to make suggestions for improvement.

  • Führung

    Which leadership styles exist? What kind of incentive systems exist and how can they be communicated? In this module, students will acquire foundational knowledge of business management as well as comprehensive knowledge of leadership issues including interaction with employees and motivation of people within the organizational environment. Students will be able to identify and evaluate factors influencing personnel, organizational and social matters and will be able to evaluate training measures in the workplace from a personnel, social, organizational and legal perspective.

  • Talent Development

    Students will learn concepts and methods in human resource management as well as tools and processes for human resource management in companies. This module focuses on talent management, compensation management, as well as special tasks within international human resource management.

  • Digitale Datenverarbeitung

    How is digital data processing applied in organizations and businesses? In this module, students will acquire professional skills in the application and development of digital data processing. In addition to acquiring knowledge in relational databases, as well as database and information systems, participants will also acquire knowledge, skills and abilities in designing basic database systems through the development of their own initial database designs. Through the acquisition of skills in requirement and problem analysis, as well as through the acquisition of initial skills in structuring data and information and the development stages of an IT project, students will also acquire competencies in analysis, design, implementation and project management.

  • Betriebliche Umweltinformationssysteme

    Students will understand sustainability from a societal perspective and will develop related professional skills. Students will acquire a foundational understanding of ecological legalities and the effect and significance of various environmental factors on a company. In this module, the various terminologies and requirements of sustainability and environmental management will be taught and discussed, thus enabling students to gain expertise in the environment as a resource.

  • Produktionswirtschaft und Logistik

    This module focuses on the fundamentals of production and cost theory, logistical problems, production planning and control, and the elementary properties of production functions. Students will learn to understand and classify theoretical knowledge based on practical examples. Students will acquire knowledge on topics such as product development, research and development, as well as patents and trademarks, product design, product liability and the life cycle of a product.

  • Externes Rechnungswesen

    What is double-entry bookkeeping? How are business transactions booked in the current year and what are annual financial statements and profit and loss accounts?
    In this module, “Externes Rechnungswesen”, students will gain comprehensive knowledge of accounting techniques and the preparation of balance sheets.

  • HR Analytics und Risikomanagement

    Students will receive a comprehensive overview of the contents and tasks involved in the interdisciplinary functions of HR risk management and HR analytics, as well as an overview of the process flows and instruments used in the processes of HR controlling and HR risk management. The acquired skills will enable students to start careers in human resources positions in companies of different sizes and industries, as well as in management careers in different operational functional areas.

  • IFRS Rechnungslegung

    IFRS stands for International Financial Reporting Standards. Students will learn to recognize the importance as well as the legal and institutional aspects of international accounting standards and will acquire knowledge of the fundamental requirements for professional activities in accounting, taxation and auditing, financial management and banking.

  • Computer-Intensive Methods

    Computer-intensive methods are used for problems with high computational complexity. This will include machine learning algorithms such as random forests, neural networks, and support vector machines as well as Monte Carlo or Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. The aim of this module is the application of these methods to concrete problems and data sets with the statistical software R. Areas of application include, on the one hand, many topics of the so-called Industry 4.0, such as smart manufacturing, predictive maintenance, supply chain management or optimized energy management, and, on the other hand, classic areas such as market research and marketing.

  • Multivariate statistische Methoden

    Multivariate statistical methods are statistical techniques used to measure and quantify relationships between different variables or relationships between different units of observation. Examples of applications include “customer segmentation”,

    in which customers are separated into homogeneous groups, or pricing policy decisions, in which customer preferences for certain product attributes need to be known. In this module, students learn a number of multivariate statistical methods and typical use cases for them. Students will develop the skills needed to determine an applicable method for a quantitative problem, perform the analysis and interpret the results.

For me, the mixture of theoretical and practical elements sets the degree program apart. Relevant topics are covered and can be applied in projects as well as in companies.
