The geology and the habitat of various bat species in the "Gipskarstlandschaft Heimkehle" nature reserve—home to one of Germany’s largest gypsum caves—made a deep impression on the international students enrolled in the MLC and MLP degree programs. Right at the start of their master’s studies, it clearly illustrated the vital responsibilities that await them in their future careers regarding the preservation of landscapes and habitats.
In the South Harz Karst Landscape Biosphere Reserve, projects involving both citizens and scientists are being carried out to preserve the region’s valuable landscape and rich biodiversity. One such citizen science project, conducted in collaboration with Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, encourages the deliberate and targeted observation and assessment of forest health, utilizing digital tools and direct on-site impressions. Students have been testing the project’s app, "MeineWaldKI" (MyForestAI), thereby contributing to forest monitoring efforts.
