Welcome to the Doctoral Center Architecture & Design Research

At the Doctoral Center for Architecture and Design Research, doctoral students at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences can conduct research on the design of the built environment. At universities of applied sciences, the field of research successfully incorporates natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Here, the following academic degrees are awarded to early-stage scientists:

Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.)

Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.)

Being awarded the right to confer doctorates to universities of applied sciences (HAW) in Saxony-Anhalt in 2021 was a clear recognition of their exceptional research strength. Universities of applied sciences are within their rights to independently award doctoral degrees. At Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, the Doctoral Center Architecture and Design Research is one of the centers assisting doctoral students on their way to the doctorate.

Different perspectives on one topic

The field of research in architecture and design is diverse. On the one hand, research deals with the theory and history of architecture and design, the built urban space, and the relationship between people, the environment, and technology. On the other hand, there are the concrete, pragmatic requirements of engineering sciences and materials research, the "human factors" of the design of interactive technologies with the knowledge on human perception and aspects of the social sciences, as well as the humanistic approaches of the humanities and cultural sciences. What unites them is the demand for economic efficiency, ecologically sustainable development, innovation and social relevance.

You may have a research topic in architecture and design you would like to pursue this with a dissertation? First, check with the supervising professors responsible for the research field. Contact the potential supervisor and make an appointment to discuss this further.

If the requirements for the supervision of a doctorate are met, you may submit the application for acceptance as a doctoral student.
