Charity: Exploring how ecosystems recover, from restored mining landscapes to freshwater habitats

Understanding ecological restoration requires more than learning theories in a lecture hall, it means experiencing restoration where it happens. As part of the Ecological Restoration module, we visited several restored post-mining landscapes, including Roßbach, Geiseltal, Kayna-Süd opencast mine, and Südfeldsee. These excursions provided a firsthand look at how degraded mining areas can be transformed into functioning ecosystems, highlighting both the challenges and long-term benefits of restoration.

In a separate field excursion, we explored aquatic ecosystem restoration along the River Bode. Through hands-on sampling of physical and biological indicators, including aquatic macroinvertebrates, we assessed river health and applied ecological monitoring techniques learned in class. Experiences like these have helped bridge theory and practice, preparing my fellow classmates and I with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration in the future.
