Integrated Design (M.A.)

Since the winter semester 2025/2026 the program is following a new  structure. This structure updates the program to reflect the latest developments in the field of design as education and design as profession in Germany. The biggest change is the extension of the program from 3 to then 4 semesters. The additional semester, namely the 3^rd semester, is a mobility semester in which students can either take up professional internships (this will be made easier since now internships are an essential part of the curriculum) or can enjoy an exchange semester with one of our many international partners. During the study semesters 1^st and 2^nd the structure consists of one main studio class, a mandatory German class, theory and mentoring, also 1 compact expertise course and 2 elective courses one of which can be high-level German. The Department of Design in Dessau established a progressive educational model reflecting the historical values of the Bauhaus. Known as the “Dessau Model“ the unique approach to education is an effective example of a new institutional structure. Since 2002 a functioning infrastructure wherein students from all parts of the world feel at home has been created.

This MAID program (Master of Arts in Integrated Design) incorporates the essential design disciplines with the creative subjects communication design, product design, space, audiovisual and digital media. They are brought together through rigorous fundamental training and interdisciplinary problem solving. These integrative components form the contour of the Master program.
Under the theme “creating relations“ the emphasis of these three design disciplines will be newly applied. This international program focuses on the development of intercultural competences and the synergetic power of a working environment with students from various countries and cultural backgrounds. Knowledge and skills can be specialized in the Master program in the form of interdisciplinary projects. A high level of media competence is required in all semesters. Projects are based on both practical and experimental research. The systematic approach to problems and the creative development of individual solutions are emphasized.

International designers, visiting artists and other specialists will support projects according to the topic and the professional area of specialization. Also in this Master study course we intend strong interconnections of both the disciplines and the subjects. Furthermore we support research relevant tasks and offer opportunities for cooperation with a selection of professional institutions. The MAID profits from the longterm cooperation with e.g. the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. Projects with the Federal Environmental Agency have been newly added. In the future, this certainly unique constellation will provide for the dealing with a multitude of socially relevant and future oriented subject complexes.

We invite graduate junior designers and bachelors from design disciplines to utilize the synergies of integrated methods of thinking and work in complex tasks to find new and visionary solutions. The courses will be in English.
