The first winter semester begins this week at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences branch in Almaty. 52 Bachelor's students are starting their studies in the Electrical and Computer Engineering degree program.
"Anhalt University of Applied Sciences is one of the 40 international universities operating in Kazakhstan. It is the only German university to have received an independent teaching license. This gives us the opportunity to offer local students an education in which they can obtain both a German and a Kazakh degree. They also have the opportunity to complete parts of their studies in Germany," says University President Professor Jörg Bagdahn.
The students complete an eight-semester Bachelor's degree course, which begins with a foundation year. This provides language and subject-specific basics and the first specialist modules before the course continues according to the curricula of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. The language of instruction is English, supplemented by extensive German courses.
German instructors teach at the university's branch office at the beginning. The first Kazakh teaching staff had already received further training at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences last year in order to gradually start teaching in the future. This will create a sustainable joint teaching basis. The Kazakh government will bear the full cost of the course. Representatives from politics and academia welcomed the students and their families at the start of the semester. In addition to a Q&A session, there was an opportunity to exchange ideas before the new students toured the laboratories and their future learning spaces.
In 2023, Germany exported goods worth around 2.2 billion US dollars to Kazakhstan. At the same time, it imported goods worth around 0.5 billion US dollars from Kazakhstan. This makes Germany Kazakhstan's fourth most important trading partner. German direct investment in Kazakhstan reached a new record level of 712 million euros in 2023. Around 300 German companies are currently active in Kazakhstan, which underlines the strength of the economic partnership.
Professor Eduard Siemens, Head of the branch office and Professor of Communication Networks, and Veronika Kirova, who coordinates the activities, are responsible for implementation on site. Eduard Siemens emphasized the importance of the project: "Good trained specialists are essential for the successful continuation of this cooperation. They strengthen the economic and scientific cooperation between our two countries. The partnership therefore makes a significant contribution to the further deepening of scientific and Economics relations."
