About the Competence Center Algal Biotechnology

The working group headed by Prof. Dr. Carola Griehl is doing research and development since many years in the biotechnological production of valuable substances and active substances (carotenoids, sulfolipids, fatty acids, proteins, amino acids, active pharmaceutical ingredients) from algae as well as the fermentation of complex biomass substrates (biogenic waste, renewable raw materials).

In interdisciplinary R&D cooperations with industrial partners as well as university and non-university research institutions, research is realised on biotechnological concepts for the cultivation of microalgae and their material and energetic utilization. A high level of expertise in the cultivation and metabolic physiology of microalgae, the product extraction from the algal biomass and the application of bioanalytical methods for the qualitative and quantitative detection of algal metabolites is available.

For research, a collection of microalgae cultures from freshwater and terrestrial habitats has been set up, which is continuously expanded with new strains.

With the aim of establishing marketable industrial algae biotechnology in central Germany and networking academic and industrial research, the Biosolar Center was established in 2011 in cooperation with GICON GmbH. Due to the construction and commissioning of a modular microalgae plant in pilot scale it is possible to transfer the results of laboratory scale up to industrial application.

The research was honored with the Hugo Junkers Award for Research and Innovation from Saxony-Anhalt in 2013:

  • Active substances from algae for the prevention of Alzheimer's dementia (category: most innovative basic research projects), in cooperation with the Fraunhofer IZI and the Leibniz Institute Halle

  • "christmas tree"-reactor - an innovative system for microalgae cultivation (category: most innovative alliance), in cooperation with GICON GmbH
