When Anhalt University's Grünes Gebäude (Building 02 - Köthen) celebrates its 100th anniversary, the focus will not only be on an eventful history, but also on future technologies with great potential. Algae research is therefore a particular focus of the anniversary week. On May 5 and 6, 2026, the Competence Center Algae Biotechnology at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and the Algae Farm Klötze are hosting the 4th Central German Algae Round Table in Köthen.
Algae are considered to be truly multi-talented: they can serve as the basis for functional foods, provide bioactive ingredients, be used in bioplastics or contribute to the production of algae oil. At the same time, they grow in a resource-saving manner and thus offer interesting approaches for the sustainable Economics of tomorrow.
On Tuesday, May 5, the event will start in the Audimax of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences with specialist presentations on the various possible uses of algae. The topics will include innovative applications in nutrition, pharmacy and industry. The program will be supplemented by discussions, poster presentations and a practical mini-algae cooking course. On Wednesday, May 6, the professional exchange will continue with further contributions on algae-based biomass, technological developments and Economics perspectives. The event will conclude with an excursion to the PUEVIT algae plant in Dresden, which will provide insights into the practical implementation of modern algae production.
The Central German Algae Round Table brings together experts from science, Economics and politics and emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation for sustainable innovations. At the same time, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences demonstrates how modern research can provide answers to current social challenges. The Central German Algae Round Table is organized by the Competence Centre for Algae Biotechnology at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences together with Algae Farm Klötze GmbH & Co KG.
The event is taking place as part of the "100 Years of the Grünes Gebäude (Building 02 - Köthen): Teaching and Research for Future Technologies" celebrations and shows how closely tradition and innovation are linked at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. While the Grünes Gebäude (Building 02 - Köthen) has stood for practical teaching and applied research for a century, algae are now opening up new perspectives for sustainable products, resource-saving processes and bio-based economic cycles.
