IEEE ISSC 2025: Researchers from Department EMW present on the Emerald Isle

On June 9 and 10, 2025, researchers from the Department of Electrical, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (FB EMW) took part in the 36th IEEE Irish Signals and Systems Conference (ISSC 2025) at the Atlantic Technological University in Letterkenny, Ireland. at the Atlantic Technological University in Letterkenny, Ireland. The renowned conference provided a platform for innovative research on AI systems and in the fields of signal processing and systems engineering.

PhD student Vladyslav Romashchenko, on behalf of the lead author Mr. Yevhenii Holopotyliuk, presented ongoing work and results based on his master's thesis. The presentation entitled "Implementation of PytoVHDL Framework for Automatic Code Transliteration and Acceleration of FPGA-based SoC Design" addressed a key challenge in hardware development: bridging the gap between Python software developers and VHDL hardware engineers in FPGA prototyping.

Mr. Romashchenko explained the PytoVHDL framework he co-developed, which uses advanced Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) technology to automatically transliterate Python-based logic descriptions into synthesizable VHDL code. The experimental results presented at the conference demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework and highlight its potential to significantly accelerate the design process for FPGA-based system-on-chip (SoC) implementations. This research promises to optimize hardware development workflows and make FPGA prototyping more accessible.

The second major contribution came from Mr. Ravin Menghani, who presented his research findings on "Optimized Indoor and Outdoor SLAM for a Quadruped-Based Robot Walking Partner to Safely Promote Elderly Mobility and Support Nursing Staff". Mr. Menghani's work focuses on improving Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms specifically for the agile robotic dogs (quadrupeds) Unitree Go1 in outdoor environments.

Mr. Menghani's project targets an urgent societal need: assisting elderly residents in nursing homes. By optimizing SLAM performance for indoor and outdoor environments, the robotic dog will act as a stable walking partner to promote mobility, provide support and integrate fall detection. This research has the potential to significantly improve care for older people and reduce the burden on care staff.

Both projects were initiated, funded and supervised by Professors Dr. Michael Brutscheck, Dr. Ingo Chmielewski and Dr. Stefan Twieg, who also took part in the conference. The professors thus experienced first-hand the positive response and commitment of the international conference participants to the work presented - a paper on the quality and relevance of research at the Department of EMW.
