Anhalt University of Applied Sciences has received a license for the educational activities of its branch "Anhalt International University" at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications (Energo University) in Kazakhstan. This makes it the first German university authorized to teach according to German curricula in Kazakhstan.
The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Ministry awards scholarships for students. The cooperation is also supported by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Almaty and by the management of Energo University, the largest university in Central Asia, on the basis of which the new educational institution operates.
Start of studies from the winter semester 2025/26
The branch was opened in September 2024. Students will now be admitted to the Bachelor's degree courses for the first time from the winter semester 2025/26. The focus is on degree programs such as Electrical Engineering and Information Technology as well as Biomedical Engineering.
The eight-semester Bachelor's degree course starts with a semester of language and subject-specific basics. After that, the course of study follows the study and examination regulations for accredited degree programs at Anhalt University. The language of instruction is English. Teaching is provided by German and Kazakh teaching staff.
The program includes intensive German language courses. Students who can demonstrate the necessary German language skills can therefore also complete parts of their studies at Anhalt University in Germany. The degree is recognized in Germany and Kazakhstan.
Strengthening German-Kazakh cooperation
The new offer will strengthen scientific and economical cooperation between Kazakhstan and Germany. In the excellence cluster of foreign universities in Kazakhstan, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences plays a key role as an expert in the energy and telecommunications sector.
"The branch office in Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan with over two million inhabitants, is not just an expansion of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. It is the first step towards creating an accessible international platform, the "Anhalt International University", where students can receive a high-quality German engineering education without having to leave their home country," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Jörg Bagdahn, President of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.
Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications and Anhalt University of Applied Sciences can look back on several years of successful cooperation, in particular through the DAAD project "IDEA-East-Hub", which has been funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 2022. Five double degree programs were established together. Partly as a result of this project, it will also be possible to teach in Kazakhstan entirely according to the curricula of Anhalt University. Energo University is providing the premises and initial laboratory equipment. In the next step, the laboratories will be equipped with the latest technology from Germany and Europe.
