On October 12, 2025, Anhalt School of Intelligent Engineering and Sustainable Development, a joint institution of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and CUG, was officially opened at the China University of Geosciences (CUG) in Wuhan.
Prof. Dr. Jörg Bagdahn, President of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, and Prof. Dr. Lothar Koppers, Vice President of Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, were present at the ceremony in Wuhan on the German side. Together with representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Education and CUG, they unveiled the new institute sign, marking the start of future-oriented cooperation in the field of intelligent technologies and sustainable development. "The new institute is an important step for both universities," said Prof. Dr. Jörg Bagdahn in Wuhan. "With their strengths in science and industry, China and Germany are an excellent match. When we share our knowledge, new things are created: for our students, for research and for society."
As early as the winter semester 2025/26, 150 students began their studies at the institute. It offers Bachelor's degree programs in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Surveying and Geoinformation. Teaching is in English and there are also intensive German lessons. The program is fully funded by the Chinese side.
"We want to train young people for future topics such as intelligent manufacturing, automation and sustainable development," says Bagdahn. "This goal unites both institutions. Students can obtain a double degree from the China University of Geosciences and Anhalt University of Applied Sciences." They can also complete parts of their studies at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Germany: A valuable opportunity to combine academic training with intercultural experience and practice in an international environment.
The range of courses on offer is set to grow further in the coming years. The first Master's programs are already planned for 2026, and in the long term, Anhalt School of Intelligent Engineering and Sustainable Development will offer around 1,600 students an international education with a German-Chinese profile. "Our cooperation with CUG shows how international collaboration can succeed," says Bagdahn. "It is an important milestone in the relationship between our two universities and a vivid example of Sino-German educational exchange."
