Algae biotechnology (CAB)

Biotechnology & Natural Products Department

For more than 20 years, the Competence Center Algae Biotechnology (CAB) has been involved in the development of technologies for the extraction of valuable and active substances from algae (including biorefinery processes), the establishment of new processes for biomass production and processing, the energetic utilization of residual biomass to produce biogas (establishment of closed material cycles) and the development of new products based on microalgae for the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, chemical and energy sectors.

An in-house collection of microalgae cultures (KASC) is available for the research work, which is continuously being expanded with new strains - mainly isolates from nature.

An algae pilot plant enables the transfer of results into industrial practice (Biosolar Center).

At the Center for Natural Product-Based Therapeutics (ZNT) in Köthen, active ingredients/active ingredient-enriched products from algae for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food sectors are identified and produced in collaboration with the Fraunhofer-IZI (Halle).

In addition to cooperation projects with partners from Economics and Science, the CAB also processes orders from third parties for the analysis of algae biomass and its ingredients from microalgae(price list).

  • A row of test tubes or small bottles is shown on a lab counter, containing liquids of various colors including green, yellow, orange, and red hues, likely representing different samples or chemical solutions for analysis. • This image displays several clear test tubes on a blue rack, each containing plants at various early growth stages with small roots. The focus is on the samples within test tubes likely used for an educational or scientific observation. © Robin Ritter
  • A scientist in a laboratory coat is carefully holding and examining multiple small test tubes inside colorful blue test tube racks. The lab setting suggests scientific research or testing is taking place. © Robin Ritter
  • A group of fifteen medical professionals dressed in lab coats poses together indoors. One individual sits in the front row wearing casual clothes. Everyone appears ready, likely for a team or group photo. © Robin Ritter
