What is Scopus AI?

Scopus AI is an extension of the Scopus database that answers search queries in natural language of instruction to help researchers and students gain a better understanding of academic content, explore new subject areas and conduct further research. The search results are based on the documents listed in Scopus (27,800+ peer-reviewed journals and 330,000+ books) - all carefully reviewed and selected by an independent panel of experts.

How does Scopus AI work?

The AI tool generates summaries from relevant documents and provides references for each search result. The link between search terms and sources is based on a vector search that takes into account the contextual meaning of the content, rather than just exact search terms (as with Boolean queries, for example). This means that sources can also be found where the search term does not appear directly in the abstract.

The search results include

  • Summaries and references: A short AI-generated summary and a list of sources used
  • Concept maps: A visual representation of the search results that visualizes the topic space and shows the relationships between different research areas(tutorial on how to use concept maps)
  • Foundational papers: A list of foundational documents with consideration of relevance and citation frequency
  • Topic Experts: A list of subject experts with a brief summary of their expertise and Scopus metrics
  • Go-Deeper-Questions: Suggestions for further search queries to expand the specialist vocabulary

Data protection, security and transparency

Scopus AI ensures transparent and trustworthy results by displaying clear references to the sources used and reducing the risk of invented or false answers (so-called "hallucinations"). The AI application relies exclusively on the metadata of the Scopus database as a knowledge base.

There is no data exchange when using Scopus AI and the data is not used to train AI models from other providers. The data protection regulations can be viewed in Elsevier's privacy policy . It is recommended not to use personal data beyond the normal use of literature databases.
